This playoff match up features the leagues two hottest teams as the Seattle Seahawks(11-5) who have won five games in a row travel to Washington D.C. to take on the Washington Redskins(10-6) who have won seven in a row. Both teams feature a strong rushing attack, older coaches who have re-invented themselves and more importantly electric rookie quarterbacks. The Redskins will be hosting their first playoff game since the Bill Clinton era back in 1999. While the Seahawks will be looking to win their first playoff road game since the Ronald Reagan era back in 1983.
The focus of this game will be on the rookie quarterbacks Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Robert Griffin III of the Redskins. Griffin was supposed to be all that as the Redskins traded a lot to acquire him. Whereas Wilson was the 6th quarterback taken in the draft. Wilson, many figured would back up Matt Flynn. While Wilson had other plans this year. After a slow start Wilson ended up having an incredible season that has him in contention for rookie of the year.
He finished the year 252-393(64.1%) passing for 3,118 yards(7.9 YPA) with a rookie record 26 touchdown passes to only 10 interceptions. He has a quarterback rating of 100.0 which is a Seahawks record. He also ran for 489 yards(5.2 YPC) with four touchdowns. Wilson has been red hot in the second half as he is 123-183(67.2%) passing for 1,652 yards(9.03 YPA) with 16 touchdowns to only two interceptions. He has posted an incredible 120.3 quarterback rating during that time. He has also ran for 361 yards(6.2 YPC) with four touchdowns. Wilson might be the NFL's best quarterback during that stretch.
His receivers are Sidney Rice who led the team with 50 receptions for 748 yards(15.0 YPC) with seven touchdowns. Rice has been pretty consistent this year as the #1 threat for this offense. Golden Tate had a very big year. He was most famous for this this catch on Monday Night but he also had a pretty good year. Tate caught a career high 45 passes for 688 yards(15.3 YPC) with 7 touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown this year to Rice. Doug Baldwin has been coming on strong lately has 29 receptions for 366 yards(12.6 YPC) with three touchdowns. Then tight end Zach Miller has 38 receptions for 396 yards(10.4 YPC) with three touchdowns. Anthony McCoy the other tight end has caught 18 passes for 291 yards(16.3 YPC) with three touchdowns. The Seahawks don't have a go to guy but spread the ball well. Which will come in handy on Sunday as the Redskins rank 30th out of 32 teams against the pass allowing 281.9 yards per game with 31 touchdowns to 21 interceptions.
The Redskins are led by what many think will win the rookie of the year. Robert Griffin the third who won the heisman last year and ended another seattle football teams season defeating the Huskies 67-56 in last years Alamo Bowl . I have a feeling this years game won't be as high scoring. Griffin is coming into this game a little banged up though. Griffin had an incredible season passing 258-393(65.6%) for 3,200 yards(8.1 YPA) with 20 touchdowns to only five interceptions. He has a quarterback rating of 102.4. What makes Griffin even more impressive is the fact he has ran for 815 yards(6.8 YPC) with seven touchdowns.
Just like Wilson, Griffin doesn't have a primary go to receiver. This year the Redskins leading receiver is Pierre Garcon who has caught 44 passes for 633 yards(14.4 YPC) with four touchdowns. The Redskins also have Santana Moss who has caught 41 passes for 573 yards(14.0 YPC) with eight touchdowns. Leonard Hankerson has caught 38 passes for 543 yards(14.3 YPC) with three touchdowns. Josh Morgan caught 48 passes for 510 yards(10.6 YPC) with two touchdowns. The Redskins will probably have a tough time against the Seahawks secondary which features three guys who have played in the pro bowl with another Richard Sherman who was snubbed for political reasons.
Both teams love to run the football. The Seahawks are led by pro bowl running back Marshawn Lynch who is going to his second straight pro bowl. Lynch made a big splash in his very first career playoff game two years ago against the Saints. When he busted a 67 yard touchdown run which many consider the greatest run in NFL history. Lynch after signing a new contract this offseason leads the Seahawks rushing attack which ranks 3rd in the NFL. Lynch finished third in the NFL in rushing yards rushing for 1,590 yards on 315 carries(5.0 YPC) with 11 touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 196 yards(8.5 YPC) with a touchdown. His backup is Robert Turbin who ran for 354 yards on 80 carries(4.4 YPC). He had 19 receptions for 181 yards(9.5 YPC). The Seahawks rushing attack will go up against the Redskins rush defense which ranks 5th in the NFL against the run.
The Redskins lead the NFL in rushing led by another rookie of theirs Alfred Morris. Morris finished the year second in the NFL in rushing yards with 1,613 yards on 335 carries(4.8 YPC) with 13 touchdowns. Morris is another late round find by head coach Mike Shanahan. Morris who was only a 6th round pick out of Florida Atlantic came out of nowhere to lead the Redskins rushing attack. Teams have to focus so much on Griffin the Redskins are able to run Morris. The Seahawks defense ranks 10th against the run has struggled the second half of the season against the run. The Redskins will hope to pound the run and keep their weakness(pass defense) off the field. If the Seahawks are able to shut down Morris look for them to win this game rather easily.
The Seahawks have a big advantage in the special teams department. Leon Washington is going to the pro bowl for the Seahawks as a kick returner. On kickoff returns he averaged 29.0 yards per return including a 98 yard touchdown. On punt returns he averaged 8.7 yards per return on 41 returns(356 yards). Kicker Steven Hauschka on the year is 24-27(88.9%) on field goals. Punter Jon Ryan is averaging 45.6 yards per punt on 65 punts and a net average of 40.8 yards per punt. He has 30 inside the 20 and only 3 touchbacks.
The Redskins on the other hand are poor in special teams. Their return average on kickoff returns is 23.5. On punt returns with new punt returner Richard Crawford the Seahawks have to worry as he is averaging 19.5 yards per return on eight returns. Their punter Sav Rocca has a 43.9 yards average on punts but only 37.2 net average. He also has just 22 punts inside the 20 on 68 attempts. Look for the Seahawks to use this field position to get a cheap score.
Pete Carroll has done a wonderful job reshaping this roster. This is a much different team than the group he led to the playoffs two years ago. Two years ago was an aging team on it's last run which Carroll squeezed a playoff win out of. This group is the youngest team in the playoffs and is looking to go on a run. Carroll has a chance to snap that 29 year streak of not winning a road playoff game and hopefully lead this team to the Super Bowl title.
This Seahawks team led the NFC in point differential with a plus 167 trailing only Denver and New England. According to Bill Barnwell's DVOA rankings the Seahawks are the best team in the NFL and 6th best team since 1991. The Seahawks finished 9th in offensive points and 1st in defensive points allowed. The bulk of this roster was either drafted by Carroll and John Schneider or acquired by them. I don't think Carroll receives enough credit for the job he is doing in Seattle.
Prediction: Seahawks 23, Redskins 17
I've learned over the years as a Seattle fan that it is never easy. I expect the game to come down to needing a stop against Griffin which is going to be stressful. Ultimately I feel like the Seahawks will win this game due to Wilson lighting up their weak secondary. The Redskins love to blitz which I feel like Wilson will hit some big plays on that as will Lynch running.
I think defensively with Brandon Browner back and Richard Sherman the Seahawks can leave those two corners on an island. Sherman should be up for defensive player of the year. He recorded eight interceptions while also leading the league with 24 pass deflections. He also forced three fumbles and scored two touchdowns this year. With those two on an island and former pro bowl safety Kam Chancellor playing over the top look for the Seahawks to allow pro bowl safety Earl Thomas to roam. This is where Thomas is most dangerous as he is so fast and quick he can read run then quickly recover for the pass. I expect Thomas to make a big play whether that be a key sack on third down, forcing a fumble or simply picking off a pass.
The Seahawks have a great opportunity as a franchise to go on a run this postseason. This will be the franchises seventh trip in the last 10 years but the first trip without Matt Hasselbeck. This is a new era of Seahawks football as Mike Holmgren, Hasselbeck, Walter Jones and Shaun Alexander are no longer around. The only Seahawk who has been here this entire run is Marcus Trufant who had a key interception return for a touchdown to end the Redskins season back in 2007. This team is growing and will only get better. I also know that in the NFL there is no guarantees so for all we know this could be it. I think the Seahawks have what it takes to get it done but it will be a nail biter like all their true road games have been this year.

Seattle Seahawks 2012 season preview
By Kshell
The Seattle Seahawks enter the 2012 season with new uniforms and high expectations under third year head coach Pete Carroll. The first two seasons under Carroll the Seahawks have experienced quite a bit of change on the roster as they finished 7-9 the past two seasons. After being shutout of the pro bowl in back to back seasons the Seahawks sent five guys to the pro bowl last season. All five of those guys were acquired by Pete Carroll. The Seahawks franchise appears on the verge of big things and that could start this season. The Seahawks return the bulk of their roster and coaching staff from last season. For the first time since the Holmgren era there appears to be some continuity on this roster. The Seahawks have a top 10 defense for the first time since the 1997 season while having a pro bowl running back in Marshawn Lynch the first time since 2005. The Seahawks for the third straight season appeared to have drafted well as they'll have three rookie starters plus several rookie contributors off the bench. There is plenty of reason to be excited for this upcoming Seahawks season.
When Carroll took over this franchise the team had gone 4-12 then 5-11. This franchise was an aging mess who had drafted poorly. Carroll has since rebuilt that. In his first season he won the NFC West Division title and upset the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. Last year appeared to be a big step back as the Seahawks started the year off 2-6. After that they proceeded to win five of their next six games. The Seahawks would drop their final two games to go 7-9. Last year due to the players strike the Seahawks had no offseason which hurt them more than most teams due to all the changes they made. The offense improved as the season grew mainly due to Lynch's running down the stretch. The Seahawks defense also became one the leagues best down the stretch. With the defense returning and a new rookie quarterback that the team is high on the future and present looks good in Seattle.
Offense:
Quarterback:
For the third straight season Carroll will be starting a new quarterback. In his first year it was long time veteran Matt Hasselbeck. Last year it was Tarvaris Jackson who the Seahawks traded to the Buffalo Bills during the preseason. The Seahawks to correct their quarterback problem from last year signed free agent backup Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn to be the starter. They also drafted Russell Wilson in the third round out of Wisconsin. Due to his play in the preseason it was Wilson who beat out Flynn for the starting job. This will be the first time the Seahawks are starting a rookie quarterback since Rick Mirer back in 1993.
Wilson earned the job with his terrific preseason where he was 40-63(63.5%) passing for 536 yards(8.5 YPA) with five touchdowns to just one interception. He had a quarterback rating of 110.3. He also ran for 150 yards on just 10 carries with a touchdown during the preseason. In college Wilson was terrific first at NC State he threw for 8,545 yards with 76 touchdowns to just 26 interceptions. Then he transferred to Wisconsin where all he did there was lead the Badgers to the Rose Bowl. Last year Wilson completed 72.8% of his passes for 3,175 yards(10.3 YPA) with 33 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Wilson has proven in college at two different programs and so far with the Seahawks in the preseason he is accurate while taking care of the ball. He can also make plays which this offense desperately needs.
Wilson's, backup will be Matt Flynn. For his career Flynn has completed 82 of 132(62.1%) passes for 1,015 yards(7.7 YPA) with nine touchdowns to just five interceptions. He has a quarterback rating of 92.8 for his career. He had one big breakout game last season against the Detroit Lions where he was 31-44(70.5%) passing for 480 yards(10.9 YPA) with six touchdowns to just one interception. Flynn's rating for the game was 136.4 as he beat out Bart Starr, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers for most passing yards and touchdowns in a single game for Packers history.
During this preseason Flynn was 28-39(71.8%) passing for 204 yards(5.2 YPA) with one touchdown and one interception. His rating was 81.6 and he was hurt by a costly Terrell Owens dropped touchdown against Denver. For Flynn many expected him to be the starting quarterback this year but instead he'll be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL which was his status the last few years in Green Bay.
In the NFL you can't win without good quarterback play. Last year Tarvaris Jackson was average with 14 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. The offense had 12 games out of 16 where they scored a negative on the expected points chart which mostly falls on the quarterbacks shoulders. The offense averaged only 20.1 PPG which was good for 23 out of 32 teams last year. In half of their games the offense scored 17 points or fewer yet still won seven games last year. If the quarterback position can improve significantly which I think Wilson will do then the Seahawks will make the playoffs.
Running Back:
This will be the strength of the Seahawks this year on offense. The running game featured by pro bowler Marshawn Lynch returns after a season which saw him rush for 1,204 yards(4.2 YPC) with 12 touchdowns. It was a tale of two seasons for Lynch who in the first six games of the year ran for only 263(43.8 yards per game) while averaging only 3.5 YPC as he only had three rushing touchdowns. Over the next nine games Lynch would rush for over 100 yards six times. He would rush for 941 yards(104.5 yards per game) as he would average 4.5 YPC with nine rushing touchdowns. Lynch had a stretch where he had at least one rushing touchdown in six straight games then when that streak was snapped he started a new streak with four straight games with a rushing touchdown. The game where he didn't rush for a touchdown he caught a touchdown giving him 11 straight games where he scored a touchdown.
Lynch was rewarded this offseason with a new contract as he was a free agent. To celebrate that contract extension he was arrested this offseason with a DUI. Now he is experiencing some back spasms which caused him to miss last years Cleveland Browns game. I would say Lynch is still the face of the offense and when he gets going nobody can tackle him. As you can see with this touchdown run vs the Eagles on thursday night football or his memorable 67 yard touchdown run against the bountygate Saints . This is why the Seahawks fans love Lynch as he eats skittles after every touchdown.
The Seahawks also drafted a running back in this draft in the fourth round Robert Turbin out of Utah State. In college Turbin ran for 3,315 yards(5.9 YPC) with 40 touchdowns. He also caught 67 passes for 845 yards(12.6 YPC) with 11 touchdowns. Turbin wasn't a starter until his medical redshirt sophomore season where he ran for 1,296 yards(6.3 YPC) with 13 touchdowns. He also caught 30 passes for 418 yards(13.9 YPC) with five touchdowns. Then this past season Turbin ran for 1,517 yards(6.1 YPC) with 19 touchdowns. He caught 17 passes for 171(10.1 YPC) yards with four touchdowns.
In the preseason Turbin ran for 165 yards(4.3 YPC) with a touchdown. He also had six receptions for 19 yards. Turbin runs hard and is big at 5'10" 222 pounds. If Lynch has to miss a game look for Turbin to step it up. Another power back the Seahawks like is Kregg Lumpkin who played for Tampa Bay last season. He ran for 105 yards(3.4 YPC) while catching 41 passes for 291 yards(7.1 YPC). In the preseason for the Seahawks he ran well as he rushed for 160 yards(4.0 YPC) with a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 32 yards.
The third down back will be special teams returner Leon Washington. Washington has done a little bit of everything for this franchise. Last year Washington ran for 248 yards(4.7 YPC) with a touchdown. He also caught 10 passes for 48 yards. He added 464 punt return yards and 1,084 yards in kick return yardage. Washington can bring some versatility to the table and will help with the special teams. The Seahawks also have pro bowl fullback Michael Robinson. Besides opening holes for his runners he also caught nine passes for 74 yards with a touchdown.
The Seahawks are keeping five running backs which appears to be a lot. When you factor in the Seahawks identity is to run the ball down the other teams throat and the fact Lynch is a little banged up this makes sense. When Lynch is healthy pounding the ball on the defense all game long with Turbin who is fresh doing the same defenses are going to be worn out when they play the Seahawks. The Seahawks have a power running game as they look to abuse other teams defenses much like their defense looks to abuse the other teams offense. The Seahawks are no longer a soft team like the Ruskell era, the running game cements that change in the culture headlined by Lynch.
Wide Receivers:
This appears to be the weak spot for the Seahawks on paper is the wide receiver position. The Seahawks are hoping that Sidney Rice can stay healthy this season and be that #1 wide receiver that he was back in 2009. Back in 2009 when Rice made the pro bowl he caught 83 passes for 1,312 yards with eight touchdowns. After an injury riddled 2010 season he left the Minnesota Vikings to join the Seattle Seahawks in 2011. In 2011 playing in only nine games he caught 32 passes for 484 yards(15.1 YPC) with two touchdowns. He did complete a 55 yard bomb during the season to Mike Williams. Rice is the only guy on the team who can be a #1 receiver. He is fast and at 6'4" he presents a big target. He is also only 26 years old so he is still in his prime unlike previous failed receivers in Seattle.
The surprise of last season on offense was undrafted rookie wide receiver Doug Baldwin who appears to be the Seahawks slot receiver. Baldwin last year caught 51 passes for 788 yards(15.5 YPC) with four touchdowns. His breakout game came against the eventual super bowl champions New York Giants when he caught eight passes for 136(17.0 YPC) yards with a touchdown. On monday night football against the Rams he caught seven passes for 93 yards(13.3 YPC) with a touchdown. He also blocked a punt that game that went for a touchdown. With Baldwin in the slot and Rice on one of the outside spots the Seahawks need someone to step up on the other outside.
That someone could be Braylon Edwards or Golden Tate. First I'll start with Edwards who the Seahawks are hoping can be that surprise wide out that they had in 2010 with Mike Williams or last year with Baldwin. Edwards back in 2007 caught 80 passes for 1,289 yards(16.1 YPC) for 16 touchdowns at the age of 24 years old. He has since been cut by the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. This preseason he has caught three passes for 83 yards with a touchdown. Edwards made two terrific catches during this preseason and is only 29 years old while still being 6'3".
The other option is Golden Tate the former 2nd round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2010 draft. So far he has been the only mistake for the Carroll/Schneider regime in the draft. As a rookie he caught only 21 passes for 227 yards while having 202 punt return yards. Last year he caught 35 passes for 382 yards with three touchdowns. In the last five games of the season he appeared to have turned things around catching 19 passes(3.8 per game) for 209 yards(41.8 YPG) with a touchdown. Tate had a terrific camp but that didn't translate to the preseason as he only had three receptions for 27 yards. This is a make or break year for Tate he is either going to establish himself on this roster or he won't be back next season.
The other two receivers are special teams contributors Ben Obomanu and Charly Martin. First on Obomanu who is now entering his seventh season with the team. Under Carroll his role as a receiver has increased quite a bit. In 2010 he caught 30 passes for 494 yards(16.5 YPC) with four touchdowns. Last season he caught 37 passes for 436 yards(11.8 YPC) with two touchdowns. Last year in a loss to Cincinnati he caught four passes for 107 yards.
While Martin had one career catch for six yards with Panthers he had a great preseason. Martin caught five passes for 40 yards with a touchdown. He also made a key block on the Russell Wilson touchdown in the first preseason game, made a key block on the Golden Tate 93 yard punt return for a touchdown as well. Carroll plans on playing close games with running the ball and defense. Which means a big emphasis on special teams as well.
For a weak part of the team I don't feel so bad about this unit. The Seahawks have some guys who have proven to make plays in the past. They have height in the red zone and if Tate can have that break out year or if Rice can stay healthy the Seahawks receiving group looks to be pretty good. Just remember the Seahawks are going to running the ball quite a bit so as long as the receivers aren't dropping the ball the passing game should be fine.
Tight End:
With improved play by the offensive line the Seahawks are hoping that tight end Zach Miller can be a bigger part of the offense. Last year Miller had a disappointing season catching only 25 passes for 233 yards. The Seahawks are hoping he can return to his Oakland days from 2008-2010 when he averaged 60.6 receptions per season for 756 yards with three touchdowns. The Seahawks would love for their 26 year old tight end to return to those numbers once again.
With more stability at the quarterback position and a better offensive line I do think Miller will be a bigger factor this season. Miller is young and a pass catching machine from his days in Oakland. Look for the Seahawks to run a lot of two tight end sets as Anthony McCoy stepped up this preseason. They also signed pass catching tight end Evan Moore from Cleveland.
Moore, in 2010 in only 12 games caught 16 passes for 322 yards with a touchdown. Last season in 16 games caught 34 passes for 324 yards with four touchdowns. The Seahawks recently cut Kellen Winslow who wouldn't take a pay cut and are hoping Moore can fill that pass catching void.
Another reason for Winslow being cut was the play of McCoy. During this preseason McCoy caught six passes for 106 yards(17.7 YPC) which cemented his spot on the roster. McCoy was a sixth round pick out of USC in 2010 saw some action last season. He caught 13 passes for 146 yards(11.2 YPC) last year.
The Seahawks will run quite a bit of two tight end sets to run the ball more effectively plus it allows for more play action passing. Like I said with better offensive line play and quarterback play look for the tight end group to be more productive something they haven't been in the last couple of seasons.
Offensive Line:
The Seahawks offensive line improved a lot over last year due to new offensive line coach Tom Cable. He makes his offensive lines better and the evidence was last season and so far this preseason. The anchor of this offensive line is third year player and former 6th pick overall in the 2010 NFL draft left tackle Russell Okung. Okung started all 10 games he played in the 2010 season then started the first 12 games last year. Both times he has been injured during the season. Okung will just be turning 25 years old this season and so far in preseason has looked dominant. The quarterbacks aren't getting any pressure from his side and he is blowing open holes for his running backs. I think this is the year Okung makes his first of hopefully many pro bowls. The rest of the line is pretty good and has good depth as well.
Starting right next to Okung at left guard is Paul McQuistan. McQuistan the former Raider who started six games in both 2006 and 2007 wasn't really seen much after that. Last year due to injury he started the final 10 games at guard and tackle. His backup will be last years first round pick James Carpenter who started the first nine games last year at right tackle. Now that he is guard I think that is more comfortable as he is an elite run blocker but not athletic enough to play tackle. I wouldn't be surprised if Carpenter eventually takes McQuistan's job on this line.
At center the Seahawks have a rock in Max Unger. Unger the second round pick out of Oregon started all 16 games at right guard in 2009. In 2010 after starting the first game at center got hurt during that game and had to miss the remaining season. Unger last year started 15 games at center for the Seahawks. With him and Okung the Seahawks have two lineman who can be part of this franchise for a while.
The Seahawks will be starting at right guard rookie J.R. Sweezy. Sweezy was a 7th round pick out of North Carolina State played defense in college but was moved to offense by Carroll. That draft pick was acquired in the Aaron Curry trade as the Seahawks once again turn a bust into a contributor. Sweezy for now is starting over 2011 third round draft pick John Moffitt who started nine games last year. Moffitt still recovering from him injury probably isn't 100%.
For right tackle the Seahawks will start Breno Giacomini who they acquired off the garbage dumpster. Giacomini last year played in 15 games making eight starts. He showed at times he can hold his own, his only problem is he can commit bad personal foul penalties so he must cut back on that.
I think with the coaching of Cable plus a big year out of Okung this offensive line is going to be pretty good this year. Probably the weakest part of the team since Steve Hutchinson left after the Super Bowl year this line looks pretty good. Lynch ran for some tough yards last year but the line also opened up some holes. I think Jackson held onto the ball too long making them look bad as well. I think the offensive line is going to be a bright spot for this Seahawks team.
Defense:
Defensive Line:
The Seahawks have a very good defensive line which can run many looks. This unit was a big part of the Seahawks being ranked 7th in the NFL in points allowed with only allowing 19.7 PPG. The Seahawks defense was 9th in total yards allowed per game as well. The Seahawks defensive line is led by defensive end Red Bryant who is the son in law of Seahawks great Jacob Green. Bryant in 2010 recorded 18 tackles with a sack in seven starts as the Seahawks defense was ranked 2nd in the NFL against the run. Last year Bryant was healthy the whole season starting all 16 games. He recorded 32 tackles with a sack plus had two interceptions including a 20 yard touchdown. What makes Bryant so special is he destroys the run when he is at defensive end and now with the Seahawks recent draft pick of Bruce Irvin they can sub him out on third downs.
When the Seahawks face a third down they'll have Irvin come in at defensive end for Bryant. Irvin is the first round pick out of West Virginia. He is a player who many didn't like the draft pick but I loved the pick. Here is the piece I wrote about the Irvin selection which as you can read I liked the pick. Irvin had 22.5 sacks in two years with the Mountaineers including 14 as a junior. With Bryant stopping the run on first and second down with Irvin creating a pass rush for a unit who only ranked tied for 19th in sacks with 33 that should be a huge plus.
The other starting defensive end will be the Seahawks leading sack master the last two seasons in Chris Clemons. In another savvy trade by the Carroll/Schneider regime where they traded Daryl Tapp for Clemons plus got a fourth round pick. In 2010 Clemons started all 16 games while recording 49 tackles with 11 sacks with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. In 2011 he started all 16 games while recording 51 tackles with another 11 sacks with three forced fumbles. Clemons has been a great pass rusher for the Seahawks over the years but will be 31 during this season so he is getting up there in age.
The other defensive ends for the Seahawks is Jason Jones from the Tennessee Titans. Jones has recorded 15.5 sacks in his four year career. He has also forced seven fumbles and can play both defensive end and defensive tackle positions. The other defensive end is Greg Scruggs who is a seventh round pick from Louisville. Scruggs had a terrific preseason and has earned a spot on this roster.
The defensive tackle position is very strong as well starring Brandon Mebane. Mebane who was a third round draft pick back in 2007 and has started 69 games since then. He recorded a career high 56 tackles last season as he was once again stuffing the run which is what he does best. The other starting defensive tackle is former Arizona Cardinal Alan Branch who started 15 games last year. He 34 tackles with three sacks as he and Mebane plugged up the middle so their opponents couldn't run on them.
Backing up both guys will be Clinton McDonald acquired in the Kelly Jennings trade and Jaye Howard. McDonald last year had 35 tackles as he forced a fumble while recovering one. While Howard is a fourth round selection out of Florida. Both will rotate in to keep Mebane/Branch fresh while both had good preseasons as the Seahawks went 4-0.
This defensive line can go with multiple looks which is nice. They can go big to stop the run or they can go with their speed to rush the quarterback. Due to this dynamic the Seahawks will force their opponent in a lot of third and longs which their new pash rush should create pressure so expect more sacks out of this unit this season.
Linebackers:
The Seahawks have a lot of youth at the linebacker position which has undergone some changes since Carroll has taken over. Gone are Lofa Tatupu after 2010 season. Aaron Curry was traded last season while David Hawthorne signed with the New Orleans Saints this past offseason. The elder statesman of this linebacker group is LeRoy Hill who is one of two members still left from the 2005 Super Bowl team.
Hill after missing all but one game of the 2010 season returned last year and had a good season. He started all 16 games recording 89 tackles and being second on the team with four sacks. Hill the lone veteran of this group and will be leaned on for leadership as these youngsters look to make a name for themselves. Malcolm Smith from USC who was drafted in the 7th round in the 2011 draft will be his backup. Last year Smith had 18 tackles including a sack.
In the middle the Seahawks will have rookie second round draft selection Bobby Wagner. Here was my reaction to the draft pick which I liked quite a bit. Wagner was a four-year starter and a tackling machine at Utah State. He also a two-time captain which shows he is a great leader something this unit could use and hasn't had since Tatupu. His backup will be veteran Heath Farwell who will contribute mostly on special teams.
The other outside linebacker will be K.J. Wright who was a fourth round selection in the 2011 draft. Wright played in 16 games while starting 13 as he was the reason the Seahawks traded away Curry. Wright had 61 tackles with two sacks. He also forced a fumble while recovering one as well. His backup will be undrafted linebacker Mike Morgan from USC. The Seahawks signed him in 2011 and he had a good preseason so he made the roster.
As you can see Hill is so valuable as the Seahawks feature a ton of youth in this unit. This group is talented as Carroll has a knack for developing defensive talent. I think this no name unit should play well like they did last year. Wright and Hill were a big part of that top 10 defensive ranking that the Seahawks produced. This team was top 10 in points allowed and total yardage proving they were a legit defense.
Secondary:
This is the strength of the team as the Seahawks feature pro bowl safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. They also have pro bowl corner Brandon Browner and all rookie corner Richard Sherman. They still have former pro bowler Marcus Trufant as a nickel corner. That is five proven guys in the NFL who the Seahawks have in their secondary. In 2011 the Seahawks were 4th in the NFL with 22 interceptions and tied for eighth with 86 pass deflections.
The Seahawks secondary is anchored by third year safety Earl Thomas. As a rookie Thomas was an alternate to the pro bowl as he recorded 71 tackles with five inteceptions. This past season teams picked on him less but he still racked up 96 tackles with two interceptions while forcing a fumble. He also recovered a fumble as well. Thomas was the 14th pick overall in the 2010 draft and is a play maker as he has already taken an interception for a touchdown in the preseason.
The other safety beside Thomas is 2010 fifth round selection Kam Chancellor. Chancellor, as a rookie played mostly special teams. Then in his first season as a starter in 2011 made the pro bowl as he recorded 95 tackles with a sack. He also had four interceptions, forced two fumbles while recovering one. To land one pro bowl safety in the NFL draft is pretty good but to land two in one draft just two years ago is incredible. With him and Thomas it makes life easy for the Seahawks corners knowing they have two great safeties who are there for help and can make plays themselves.
The former CFL defensive player of the year was a rookie last year in the NFL for the Seahawks in Brandon Browner. Browner also made the pro bowl as he learned early from his mistakes and become a ball hawking corner. Browner finished the year with 54 tackles and six interceptions for a league leading 220 yards including two touchdowns. He had a game clinching 94 yard touchdown against the eventual Super Bowl champions New York Giants. Browner also had 23 pass deflections as he is a big physical corner at 6'4".
The other corner is second year player Richard Sherman who was a fifth round draft pick in the 2011 draft. He played all 16 games starting the final 10. He recorded 54 tackles while intercepting four passes. He had 17 pass deflections while forcing a fumble. The nickel corner will be 10 year NFL veteran Marcus Trufant. Trufant is the longest standing member on this team has he has been here since 2003.
The other backups will be Jeremy Lane who will be a rookie as he was a 6th round draft choice in this years draft at corner. Byron Maxwell is another backup corner who was a 6th round draft choice in the 2011 draft. At safety you have Jeron Johnson out of Boise State who went undrafted but made the Seahawks roster last year. Another safety is Winston Guy another 6th round draft selection in this years draft. The last safety is Chris Maragos who was on the Seahawks roster last year.
The Seahawks have 10 guys in the secondary as they like to run nickel quite a bit. This is the strength of the team as they held their opponents to 11th fewest passing yards in the NFL. Heading into last year these names were unproven as the entire secondary wasn't in the NFL as far back as 2009. Both corners weren't in the NFL as of 2010. The Seahawks young secondary is light years ahead of where they should be. The scary thing is they can only get better too. Look for this unit to be one of the premiere secondaries in the entire NFL.
Kicking:
The Seahawks kicking game once again was pretty good this past season under new kicker Steven Hauschka and veteran punter Jon Ryan. Hauschka this past season was 25-30(83.3%) on field goals while making all 34 PAT's. This preseason he was 10-12(83.3%) on field goals with both misses coming from beyond 50 yards. With the Seahawks emphasis being on running the ball, being safe with the ball and playing good defense look for Hauschka to be counted on quite a bit from field goal range.
That also means you need good field position as Ryan enters his fifth season in Seattle. Last season he had 95 punts for 4,431 yards which was good for an average of 46.6. The number of punts, yards and average were all career highs for Ryan.
The kicking game last year and this preseason appears to be in good hands with Hauschka and Ryan. Ball control teams who rely on defense need a good kicking game as well. I think both guys will have another rock solid season for the Seahawks.
Coaching:
I'm in the Pete Carroll believer camp I must say. Carroll in Seattle is only 14-18 as a head coach but the team was 9-23 the previous two seasons he took over so he has improved them five wins over a two year span. He has also drafted very well for the Seahawks in his three years. The 2010 draft has two pro bowlers, three starters, five guys on the active roster and the other on the PUP list. The 2011 draft which everyone loves to bash produced an all-rookie selection, four starters and six guys on the team overall. Then the 2012 draft will have three starters and nine guys on this team. So 20 of the 53 man roster is draft picks by Carroll in the last three years alone.
The talent level has improved a lot since Carroll has became head coach/team president. He took over an aging talent less roster who produced zero pro bowlers in 2009 and 2010. He had to handle replacing a team legend in Matt Hasselbeck gracefully which I felt he did a good job of that. More importantly he has changed the culture of this team. No longer the soft little Ruskell's this team is a hard nosed physical team who will punch you in the mouth. On offense their identity is ground and pound while on defense their identity is attacking while being tough. This is a tough team and that is because of Carroll. Carroll the only man in Seahawks history to win a division title and playoff game in his first season with the team looks to reach the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
Anything short of a disaster and I think Carroll will be given another season in 2013. This team isn't built for now yet is talented enough to win now. This roster is shaped up to win in the future as well. This team will be a force to be reckon with pretty soon. Carroll has the Seahawks on the verge of big things. Carroll was a risky hire but I love the way he operates business. I love his cut throat attitude of every player has to earn a spot on this roster. He doesn't care where you were drafted or what your contract is he has the best player plays which is something the Mariners should try to copy. Carroll is going to win in Seattle very soon and once he starts winning the team will be winning consistently for years to come.
Outlook:
I think this is the year the Seahawks have their first winning season since 2007. Going into this season I thought this team would go 9-7 but after seeing them go 4-0 in the preseason and more importantly the play of Russell Wilson I have this team going 10-6. I think the San Francisco 49ers come back to earth a little bit and our Seahawks win the division title.
Last year the offense was terrible and specifically the quarterback position. The team still won seven games despite major turnover once again on their roster with no training camp or OTA's. I think the offense is improved with another year of Tom Cable on the offensive line coaching his guys up. I do think the combination of Lynch and Turbin running on opponents is going to wear down opposing defenses. I think Wilson will make just enough plays with his legs and his is an accurate quarterback the Seahawks offense will be very solid.
A solid offense with this defense is going to win some games. This defense was a top 10 defense without really a pass rusher besides Chris Clemons. Now with Bruce Irvin and some other key guys either drafted or brought in look for the Seahawks to have more pressure on defense. The defense particularly the strong secondary will get tested some this year as they face Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford and Tom Brady. All those guys are in the first half of the season as well.
If the Seahawks can survive the first half of their schedule especially a four week stretch of at Carolina, New England at home, at San Francisco on a Thursday night and at Detroit the schedule eases up. If the Seahawks can manage to be 4-4 at the halfway point they can do big things in the second half as the schedule is a bit back loaded with cream puffs like Arizona, St.Louis, Minnesota and the Jets at home. Play at the Dolphins and the Bills in Toronto. If the Seahawks get off to a 6-2 start then start planning your super bowl vacation because the second half of the schedule much easier than the first half.
This franchise is on the rise from when Carroll took over in 2010. This team has plenty of young talent as they continue to draft well. Almost every player who is a key contributor is still in his 20's which means this team is going to be good for a while. This team has plenty of depth which is evidence by their 4-0 preseason record as they had to cut some good players. This team is ready to make some noise this year as the 12th man is ready to let loose on their opponents. The Seahawks are going to be a fun team to watch this season especially on defense. The year 2012 the year of the 12th man started off with our Cortez Kennedy being selected for the hall of fame and will end with our Seahawks clinching a division title for the sixth time since 2004. Carroll has this team going in the right direction now it's just time to sit back and enjoy this young team do work on the rest of the NFL.

Earl Thomas named to pro bowl, five other Seahawks named alternates
By Kshell
For the first time in three seasons the Seattle Seahawks will be sending a player to the pro bowl. When the Pro Bowl teams were announced second year safety Earl Thomas was selected to the pro bowl while five of his teammates could later join him as alternates. Last season as a rookie Thomas was named an alternate while this year he is finally going to the pro bowl. Of the six Seattle Seahawks honored five of those players were acquired by Pete Carroll through the draft, trade or free agency showing you the job he has done shaping this roster. Thomas who was a first round selection last season along with Russell Okung is part of a solid Seahawks foundation for years to come. Thomas becomes the first Seahawks safety selected to the pro bowl since Darryl Williams in 1998.

When the Seahawks selected Thomas last year in the first round he changed the Seahawks defense. The Seahawks for the past decade have struggled at the safety position but finally had a youngster in Thomas. He was paired up with veteran Lawyer Milloy as Milloy taught him the game well. Milloy also mentored pro bowl alternate Kam Chancellor last season as well. For a franchise who hadn't had a pro bowl safety in 13 seasons in one draft selected a pro bowler and an alternate. Thomas statistically had a better season last year than this year although this year he hasn't allowed any long touchdown passes. For the year Thomas has recorded 90 tackles, two interceptions, while recovering two fumbles.
Thomas has been all over the place in helping shape the Seahawks new identity. The Seahawks under Carroll are now a physical team that thrives on good defense instead of the Mike Holmgren era where it was all about the offense. Thomas has transformed this secondary which features him as a pro bowler and two alternates which many saw as a weakness heading into the season when in fact turned into a strength. Carroll has made so many changes to this team that there isn't really a face for this franchise. Well I think there is a face now and his name is Earl Thomas the safety from the University of Texas. Hopefully Thomas will be joined by some of his other teammates in Hawaii as well.
The other alternates were safety Kam Chancellor, cornerback Brandon Browner and fullback Michael Robinson were first alternates. Second alternate was running back Marshawn Lynch while punter Jon Ryan was third alternate. I'll start with Lynch who has rebounded from a rough start to have rushed for 1,118 yards(4.2 YPC) with 12 touchdowns. Lynch has rushed for a TD in 11 straight games for the Seahawks which is a record. Chancellor on the season has been great along with Thomas in recording 87 tackles, four interceptions, a sack, forcing two fumbles and recovering a fumble. Browner is a great story as he played in the CFL for six seasons and Carroll discovered him out of nowhere. Browner this year had six interceptions which were returned for 220 yards including two touchdowns. Michael Robinson and Jon Ryan have been solid as well this season. Carroll other than Ryan has drafted Thomas and Chancellor, traded for Lynch and signed Browner and Robinson.
In conclusion, I'm so happy for Earl Thomas couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. When hearing the news that he had made the pro bowl Thomas tweeted this "Bout to go to dinos pub and order ever drink they got ...lol 12th man come join me it's on me..." which for those who took him up on his offer I bet had a great time. Also during preseason this year I attended a practice where let's just say the guys who stuck around to sign autographs are no longer on the roster. Then one guy came out and that was Thomas who signed for everyone. It was worth the wait too as I also own his jersey as well.
Thomas is one of those guys who will be a household name in Seattle and throughout the nation. He just turned 21 years old too and doesn't appear to have a big head which most people often complain about when it comes to athletes. Earl Thomas is not only a great player but also a great human being as well. For the other alternates hopefully they can somehow make the pro bowl as well to join Thomas who is the first Seahawk in the pro bowl since 2008. A franchise that had multiple pro bowlers from 2003-2008 was shutout for two straight years showing the job Carroll inherited and has now done. Congrats to Earl Thomas on making the pro bowl he definately deserves it!

Rookie Baldwin has big day in Seahawks stunning 36-25 upset win over Giants
By Kshell
The Seattle Seahawks(2-3) stunned the New York Giants(3-2) in the medowlands 36-25. Seahawks defense recorded a safety, a pick six while forcing five turnovers during the game. Seahawks no huddle offense continued to work this week as the Giants were on their heels entire first half. Marshawn Lynch had his best game of the season rushing for 98 yards with a touchdown. Tarvaris Jackson started the game off red hot then was injured as his backup Charlie Whitehurst threw the game winning touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks will now have a quarterback controversy. While the main star in this game was rookie wide receiver Doug Baldwin who had eight receptions for 136 yards with the game winning touchdown. For the Seahawks season to matter this was a must win. Now the Seahawks will head into their bye week at 2-3 and kicking themselves for losing last week 30-28 at home. The Seahawks won a game on the road which nobody expected them to do. This was the first win in the Eastern time zone for the Seahawks since 2007. This was an all around great team win for Pete Carroll and his Seahawks. The Seahawks the last six quarters actually look like a playoff football team.
The Seahawks did something against the Giants they hadn't done the previous four games which is score in the first quarter. In fact the Seahawks continued their no huddle attack which worked so well in the second half against the Falcons. The Seahawks began their drive from their 20 yard line which they let Tarvaris Jackson come out throwing. Jackson began the game with a completion to Ben Obomanu for a gain of nine yards. Jackson hit Lynch for a gain of 17 yards. Jackson hit Obomanu again for a gain of 11 yards to the Giants 43 yard line. After a four yard run by Justin Forsett to the Giants 39 yard line Jackson completed yet another pass to Sidney Rice for a gain of 16 yards. The Giants committed a 12 yard penalty helmet to helmet giving the Seahawks the ball on the 11 yard line. After an incomplete pass Jackson finished off the drive with an 11 yard touchdown pass to Obomanu to give the Seahawks an early 7-0 lead. For the Seahawks that was the first time all season long they had scored in the first quarter as the no huddle confused the Giants defense. Jackson was five for six passing on the drive for 64 yards including the touchdown.
The Giants were led by their quarterback Eli Manning who would respond to the Seahawks score with a score of his own. The drive began with a short run by Manning then a 13 yard run by Ahmad Bradshaw which he followed up with a five yard run. Manning hit Mario Manningham for a gain of 17 yards to the Seahawks 43 yard line. Manning hit Jake Ballard for a big gain of 28 yards to the Seahawks 15 yard line. After a short three yard run by Victor Cruz, Manning finally finished off the drive with a 12 yard strike to his tight end Ballard to tie up the game at 7-7. For the drive Manning was three for three passing for 57 yards with a touchdown. The Giants made that drive look pretty easy on the Seahawks secondary as it appeared Manning was poise to have a big day. He would have a big day yardage wise but far as being productive not as much as many expected.
What would happen next was a crazy swing of momentum trading places for both teams. After a Seahawks punt the Giants had the ball on their own 14 yard line. Facing a third and seven from the 17 yard line Manning was sacked by Chris Clemons which Manning fumbled. The ball was recovered by Earl Thomas on the Giants 11 yard line. After an incomplete pass the Seahawks gave the ball to Marshawn Lynch who fumbled the ball right back to the Giants. The Seahawks defense would three and out the Giants after the missed opportunity to take over on the Giants 48 line. Lynch would make up for his mistake as he busted his longest run of the season. Lynch ran for 47 yards down to the Giants one yard line showing a rare burst of speed. Lynch rushed for his second touchdown of the season with a one yard plunge to give the Seahawks a 14-7 lead on the road.
The Seahawks defense continued to dominate the Giants forcing them to punt on the following possession. The Seahawks took over from their own 13 yard line up 14-7 in the second quarter. Facing a third and seven from the 16 yard line Jackson hit Doug Baldwin for a gain of 21 yards. Jackson hit Baldwin again for a gain of 25 yards to the Giants 38 yard line. Lynch followed that up with a run of 13 yards to the Giants 25 yard line. Lynch then had a six yard rush to the 19 and after a first down run by Forsett was called back due to holding. Second and 14 Jackson hit Obomanu for a gain of six to set up third and eight from the Giants 23 yard line. Jackson hit Obomanu again for a gain of seven yards to set up fourth and one from the 16. Carroll decided to go for it as Jackson ran for two yards on a quarterback keeper to the 14 yard line. Jackson hit Obomanu again for seven yards to the seven yard line. On second and three fullback Michael Robinson ran for two yards to the Giants five yard line. Facing a third and one Robinson ran again for a gain of three yards to the two yard line. Robinson who had one carry all season would receive another carry going for a yard but fumbled on the two yard line so the Seahawks came up empty. Later in the game Earl Thomas intercepted Manning to the 50 yard line but the Seahawks offfense couldn't take advantage of the mistake.
The Seahawks would have the ball at midfield with under two minutes left in the half up 14-7. Jackson hit Leon Washington for a gain of six yards but after getting sacked was facing a crucial third and five. Jackson instead of throwing the ball away lobbed the ball down the sidelines to be picked off. Giants had the ball on their own 41 yard line 51 seconds left in the half. Manning would begin the drive hitting Hakeem Nicks for a gain of 12 yards. With 29 seconds left he hit Manningham for a gain of 10 yards to the Seahawks 37 yard line. Manning then hit Nicks for a gain of 18 yards to the Seahawks 19 yard line. Manning finished off the drive hitting Nicks on a fade pass burning Walter Thurmond who is filling in for Marcus Trufant. Despite dominating the first half the Giants had tied the game up at 14-14 heading into the second half.
The third quarter began with both teams trading off punts. The Seahawks took over on their own 29 yard line which saw Tarvaris Jackson rush for a gain of 11 yards to their own 40 yard line. In the process Jackson was injured and had to leave the game. Jackson wouldn't return and was replaced by Charlie Whitehurst. After a short run and a penalty Whitehurst hit Baldwin for a gain of seven yards to set up a third and eight. Then the Seahawks had another false start setting up a third and 13 which Whitehurst hit Baldwin for a gain of 10 yards. Punting from their own 47 yard line John Ryan pinned the Giants on their own five yard line. The Giants from their five yard line tried a stretch play to backup runningback Ware which was blown up by Anthony Hargrove. Hargrove tackled him in the endzone for a safety to give the Seahawks a 16-14 lead.

With 2:13 left in the third quarter the Seahawks took over with the ball on their own 34 yard line. On second down Whitehurst hit Rice for a gain of nine yards setting up a huge third and one from the 43 yard line. Whitehurst hit Rice over the middle with a bullet for a gain of 11 to the Giants 46 yard line. After an incomplete pass the Seahawks then turned to Lynch who busted an 18 yard run to the Giants 28 yard line. After back to back runs by Lynch set up third and five from the 23 yard line. Whitehurst was then sacked by former Seahawks safety Deon Grant pushing the Seahawks all the way back to the Giants 33 yard line. That set up a 51 yard attempt by Steve Hauschka who missed the game winning kick last week badly. This week Hauschka drilled the 51 yarder with ease. In fact he made it look so easy that looking back maybe Carroll knew what he was doing by asking Hauschka to attempt the game winning kick from 61 yards out. In the fourth quarter with now their backup quarterback on the road the Seahawks were leading 19-14 over the Giants. The fourth quarter would be a wild quarter with plenty of momentum changing plays for both sides. What happened next for the Giants is the type of play that normally would have broke the Seahawks spirits instead they kept playing through it.
What happened next to the Seahawks was a rather unfortunate play that at the time looked like turned the game for the worse. Facing a second and 18 from their own 27 yard line Manning hit Victor Cruz for a gain of five yards setting up a big third and 13 from the 32 yard line. Manning would roll to his right then throw the ball up for grabs. Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor tipped the ball in mid air while cornerback Richard Sherman went for the ball. Cruz caught the ball with one hand then rumbled for a 68 yard touchdown score to give the Giants 20-19 lead. Since the Giants were up by just one point they decided to go for two. Manning saw the Seahawks defense was weak up the middle so he audibled to a running play to Bradshaw up the middle. The Giants led 22-19 with 11 minutes left in the game.
After the Giants defense stuffed the Seahawks offense their offense took over up three points. The Giants then looked like the Giants of old which has hurt them in the past with a costly turnover. Facing a third and seven Manning would hit the hero Cruz for a gain of five yards only for Cruz to fumble the ball. Chancellor recovered the ball on the Giants 25 yard line to give the Seahawks new life. Whitehurst couldn't take advantage of the great field possession as the Seahawks didn't even advance the ball a single yard. Hauschka would tie the game up with a 43 yard field goal at 22-22 with 10:15 left in the game. The Giants would go on a long five and a half minute drive starting from their own 20 yard line. Bradshaw began the drive with two runs of 12 yards to their own 32 yard line. Manning would then hit a 17 yard pass to the 49 yard line. Manning hit tight end Ballard for a gain of 32 yards as he was dragging defenders down to the Seahawks 19 yard line. After a Bradshaw run of nine yards then a short rush the Giants had first and goal from the seven yard line. That is when the Seahawks defense would get tough and hold the Giants to a field goal. The Seahawks were trailing 25-22 with less than five mintues to go for Whitehurst needed a field goal for the tie and a touchdown for the win.
Whitehurst would create a quarterback controversy with this drive starting on his own 20 yard line. Whitehurst began the drive hitting Baldwin for a gain of 22 yards to their own 42 yard line. After an incomplete pass and a short three yard run by Washington the Seahawks were facing a huge third and seven from their own 45 yard line with 4:03 left in the game. Whitehurst hit Baldwin for a gain of eight yards for the first down. Whitehurst then hit Anthony McCoy down the middle for a gain of 20 yards to the Giants 27 yard line with a little over three minutes left. After a rush of no gain for Lynch is when Whitehurst would hit his biggest pass of his career. Whitehurst had a hard count which caused the Giants to jump offsides. Thinking the play was over most of the Giants defenders quit on the play which Whitehurst saw a wide open Baldwin to his left. Whitehurst hit Baldwin for the go ahead touchdown to give the Seahawks a 29-25 lead with 2:37 left in the game. On the drive Whitehurst was four for five passing for 77 yards with the go ahead score. Whitehurst who to that point hadn't played very well will create a controversy for sure. More importantly for the Seahawks they had to stop Manning who was shredding their secondary with 2:37 left in the game up just four points.
Manning had one last drive left in him to scare Seahawks fans. Manning began the drive hitting Bradshaw for what should have been a two yard gain but Aaron Curry missed the tackle. Bradshaw would turn that into a gain of 15 yards to their own 35 yard line. Right before the two minute warning Manning would hit Cruz again for another huge play which went for 41 yards to the Seahawks 24 yard line. The Giants had to score a touchdown but time was no longer a problem for them. Manning then hit Cruz for a gain of 19 yards to the Seahawks five yard line with 1:27 left in the game. After a five yard penalty the Giants had the ball on the Seahawks 10 yard line. Manning hit Cruz who originally slipped on his route, then attempted another one handed catch. As he was going to the ground the ball slipped off his one hand as Brandon Browner snatched the ball. Browner then made his way up the right sidelines for a 94 yard interception touchdown return to give the Seahawks a commanding 36-25 lead with a little over a minute left in the game. That return was the longest interception return in Seahawks franchise history. The game would end as Manning was driving the Giants then would thrown another interception to Chancellor at the Seahawks 42 yard line. The Seahawks pulled off by far the biggest upset of the weekend winning their first road game on the east coast since 2007.
The Seahawks won this game on the road despite allowing a career high 420 yards passing to Eli Manning. Manning finished the game 24-39(61.5%) for 420 yards(10.8 YPA) with three touchdown passes but three interceptions with a fumble too. Victor Cruz had eight receptions for 161 yards with a touchdown but a costly fumble. The Seahawks defense caused five turnovers and a safety. The Seahawks had two quarterbacks play well today. First starter Tarvaris Jackson was 15-22(68.2%) for 166 yards(7.5 YPA) with a touchdown and an interception. Charlie Whitehurst off the bench was 11-19(57.9%) for 149 yards(7.8 YPA) with the game winning touchdown. Both quarterbacks benefitted from a breakout game by Baldwin who had eight receptions for 136 yards with a touchdown. Ben Obomanu also had six receptions for 51 yards with a touchdown. Rice had four receptions for 38 yards. The Seahawks also saw Marshawn Lynch have his best game of the year. Lynch rushed for 98 yards(8.2 YPC) on 12 carries with a touchdown. Lynch also caught four passes for 33 yards which proved to be his best all around game. The Seahawks safety play was great as well with Thomas and Chancellor each recovering a fumble then also intercepting a pass.
All in all, the Seahawks needed this win very badly as they improve to 2-3. The Seahawks have officially ended all "Suck for Luck" talk which will make some fans happy while other fans will be upset. The Seahawks offense actually played pretty well due to the no-huddle offense as both quarterbacks played pretty well while Lynch had his second best game as a Seahawk. The receivers made some plays which was nice to see that if Rice doesn't make any plays then nobody can. The defense despite giving up so many passing yards caused turnovers which is what defenses are all about in today's game. Overall, this was a huge win for the Seahawks this season as they are trying to defend their NFC west championship. Carroll showed with that win plus the Saints win last year he can beat his opponent despite not having as much talent as the other team. Carroll showed he is a top tier coach and hopefully the wins will start following him.
Observations:
- We have a quarterback controversy in Seattle due to Whitehurst hitting the game winning pass. Like last year with the win over the Rams I'm going to stick with the starter. I felt Jackson out played him and dating back to last week Jackson has played well in the no huddle offense Jackson threw for 166 yards completing 68.2% of his passes in the process. While Whitehurst threw for 149 yards while completing 57.9% of his passes in the process.
I think I'll trust Carroll's player evaluation over mine. Carroll has seen these guys in practice every day plus in the film room. Jackson started off slow but is looking pretty decent especially in the no huddle offense. Whitehurst looked a lot better than he did during anytime last season. Are either of these quarterbacks going to take the Seahawks to the promise land? No. I do like the fact that the quarterbacks both of them when asked performed well. I do like how both seem to have improved quite a bit over last season.
- Doug Baldwin has been a terrific pick up for the Seahawks. Baldwin was an undrafted receiver out of Stanford who made the team. For the season Baldwin has had 20 receptions for 330 yards(16.5 YPC) with two touchdowns already. That puts Baldwin on pace to catch 64 passes for 1,065 yards with 6.5 touchdowns. Those are great rookie numbers let alone a guy who was undrafted coming out of college. Considering second round pick Golden Tate still is taking forever to adjust to this offense that is impressive.
Baldwin had a breakout game with eight receptions for 136 yards with a touchdown. He caught the winning touchdown pass and was constantly catching big passes. This is the third week out of five games Baldwin has led the team in receiving yards for that particular game. The Seahawks might have found a gem in Baldwin like they did last season with Mike Williams.
- Marshawn Lynch finally had the type of game Seahawks fans have been waiting for. Lynch ran for 98 yards on just 12 carries with a touchdown. Lynch also caught four passes out of the backfield. Lynch did have a costly redzone fumble but he rebounded nicely with a long 47 yard run. Lynch actually showed a burst of speed for once which I haven't seen him do all season long. This was easily Lynch's best game of the season given the amount of yards he had, the yards per carry, the amount of receptions and even the touchdown. Going forward this is what the Seahawks need from Lynch if they have any chance of being a playoff team this year. Lynch needs to factor into the passing game more often in my opinion so when he does get shut down he is still a productive member to the team.
- This was an impressive win for Carroll and his group. He saw his best corner Marcus Trufant miss this game and second best receiver Mike Williams miss the game. His starting quarterback(Tarvaris Jackson) went down in the middle of the game as well. This was a team who gave the Seahawks their most embarassing loss of the season last year when the Seahawks lost 41-7 at home to the Giants. For Carroll to have his team rebound from that tough home loss to Falcons and win on the east coast was very impressive. I don't know if Carroll is the best president in the NFL but I do know the man can coach up talent as well as anyone in the NFL. Carroll didn't buy into the top 10 draft talk like he didn't last year. Carroll is trying his best to win this year because in the NFL you can't afford to tank a season or you could be out of a job very quickly.
In conclusion, this was a must win for the Seahawks and they responded well. Carroll has this team believing even though their fanbase(me) isn't quite yet believing. The Seahawks will now head into the bye week at 2-3 then take on the Cleveland Browns whose team president is Mike Holmgren. The Seahawks had a great game from their offense, defense and special teams. This was a total team effort and they had several opportunities to get down on themselves which they didn't. The Seahawks defeated a good team on the road and maybe as the season goes on this young team can play better together. The Seahawks showed sunday they are far from being dead in this NFC West playoff picture which Carroll has his team believing they can repeat as division champions.

Seahawks Looking to Make It Two in a Row
By Wyatt Lyles
The Seahawks will be taking on the Atlanta Falcons tomorrow afternoon in Seattle. Coming off of last week's win over the Cardinals, hopefully the Seahawks can use that momentum to make it two in a row.
Quite frankly, this is just about the best time that we could be facing the Falcons. So far this season, they just haven't looked like the same team that had the best record in the NFC this past season. They're also 1-2, and have played some sloppy football thus far. This is definitely a game that I think the Seahawks can win.
Last week, the defense went out there and gave another impressive performance. The run defense was firing on all cylinders with Red Bryant back to his old self. The pass rush also did well with Chris Clemons and Leroy Hill knocking guys around left and right to get to the QB. It was an awesome thing to watch. The guys back in the secondary looked great as well. Earl Thomas made several nice plays throughout the game, as did Kam Chancellor, who had the game-sealing interception with about a minute left in the game. Brandon Browner also looked pretty good out there, and performed better than most expected while matched up with Larry Fitzgerald.
Overall, the defense played very well last and that will be the key to winning again tomorrow. If the defense can play like they did last week, this is a very winnable game. Putting some pressure on Matt Ryan to force to make mistakes and create turnovers will be big.
While the defense will be able to keep us in the game, the offense needs to pick up the slack. Granted, they did score last week, but it came from an 11-yard run from Tarvaris Jackson. Not that this is a bad thing, but someone else should be scoring touchdowns for this team. And 13 points a week will not get you a win against most teams.
The run game did vastly improve last week, they need to translate this into touchdowns. We need to see a running back get a rushing touchdown, which has yet to happen thus far. In addition to that, we need to see another passing touchdown from Jackson. He did have two back in week one, but he hasn't had one yet. Hopefully the return and continued presence of Sidney Rice will help on that account.
Looking at injuries, the Seahawks don't have too many at this point. There is one key injury that could have an impact on tomorrow's game, though. Kam Chancellor is doubtful with a "deep thigh bruise." If he can't go, that means Atari Bigby would most likely get the start in his place. Nothing against Bigby, but I don't think that he'll be as good as Kam has been so far this season. I'm ready to proven wrong, though. Also doubtful is CB Byron Maxwell (ankle). OT Jarriel King (ankle), FB Mike Robinson (ankle), and LB Matt McCoy (shoulder/head) are all probable for the game.
This is a game that I really believe the Seahawks can win. The Falcons aren't doing all that great so far this season, and while the Seahawks aren't doing amazing, I think they're improving. For them to win this game, the offense needs to continue to get a rhythm going. If they can't do that, they won't win this game. I think that they will, though, so I think the Seahawks win this one and go to .500 on the season.

49ers beat Seahawks in season opener 33-17
By Kshell
The Seattle Seahawks(0-1) opened their season up with a thud in losing a divisional game on the road to the San Francisco 49ers(1-0) 33-17. The Seahawks offense couldn't move the ball with much consistency behind Tarvaris Jackson while the special teams allowed back to back touchdown returns late in the fourth quarter to blow the game wide open. Pete Carroll couldn't have liked what he saw from his team this sunday down in San Francisco. The Seahawks overall proved many critics right when calling the Seahawks one of the worst teams in the NFL heading into the season. The Seahawks at times was looking like a team who is going to be headed for a long season. The Seahawks didn't help themselves with a horrible first half which set them behind for the entire game.
The first half was the type of half many expected out of these two bad teams. In fact the first quarter featured zero scoring from either offense. The 49ers were winning the field possession game due to great punting and Leon Washington not fielding two punts. The 49ers in the second quarter finally scored some points after Ted Ginn Jr. returned a punt 31 yards to the Seahawks 27 yard line. After a Frank Gore 12 yard run the Seahawks stopped the 49ers and held them to a David Akers field goal. The Seahawks following possession saw Tarvaris Jackson fumble the ball as the 49ers recovered on the Seahawks nine yard line. The Seahawks defense once again held the 49ers to an Akers field goal giving the 49ers a 6-0 lead. After another Seahawks possession that went nowhere the 49ers went on a nine play 50 yard drive which was highlighted by Alex Smith hitting Vernon Davis for a 27 yard gain. Just like the two previous drives the 49ers would stall in the redzone and would have to settle for another field goal by Akers to take a 9-0 lead. The 49ers decided to kick the field goal instead of going for it on fourth and one. Harbaugh was also being ultra consertative in the red zone. He knew the Seahawks offense wasn't doing anything so he wanted to take the two possession lead over the defending division champions Seahawks.
The Seahawks would continue to do nothing in the first half. In fact the Seahawks would have just 37 total yards of offense in the first half. The 49ers would finally make the Seahawks pay led by Smith who finally had his one and only good scoring drive of the game. On the six play 49 yard drive Smith was four for four passing for 29 yards while also adding a key 11 yard run. After two Seattle penalties on third down to extend the drive Smith would finally end the drive with a one yard touchdown run giving the 49ers a 16-0 lead. The Seahawks had one final series before halftime but that ended when Jackson threw an interception on a hail marry attempt. The Seahawks offense had looked pathetic all half while the 49ers offense failed to put the Seahawks away.
In the second half the Seahawks would actually start to move the ball. First the Seahawks defense who played great all game long three and outed the 49ers. Then the Seahawks took over on their own 44 yard line. After two Jackson incomplete passes he would hit rookie Doug Baldwin for a gain of 12 to move the chains. Then Marshawn Lynch would have his only good run of the game with a 12 yard run which saw him get stuffed then bounce out to the left to the 32 yard line. Jackson would hit Ben Obomanu for a gain of 13 to the 49ers 19 yard line. Jackson would hit Mike Williams for a gain of eight then Lynch would rush for three yards to give the Seahawks first and goal. On second and goal from the eight yard line Jackson would hit Golden Tate for the touchdown. That would be the Seahawks first score of the 2011 season and more importantly cut the lead to 16-7. After trading punts the Seahawks would go on a 11 play 50 yard drive ending with a Steve Hauschka 39 yard field goal to cut the lead to 16-10 at the start of the fourth quarter. The game would continue to be a defensive struggle as both teams showed they are not offensive juggernuts for this season.
The 49ers would respond to that field goal with a 15 play 72 yard drive ending with the fourth field goal of the game for Akers extending the 49ers lead to 19-10 with under six minutes left in the game. The Seahawks who had outplayed the 49ers in the second half would respond with a six play 80 yard drive. Jackson on second down would hit tight end Zach Miller for 13 yards to their own 33 yard line. Jackson would hit Williams for a gain of seven yards setting up a third and three. Jackson would rush for a gain of five yards to pick up the crucial first down. Jackson would hit undrafted rookie Baldwin who was facing his old college coach Harbaugh and Baldwin would take the pass 55 yards for the touchdown to cut the lead to 19-17. The Seahawks who had been stopping the 49ers all game long were feeling good about themselves as it appeared they were going to make the 49ers pay for kicking all those red zone field goals. Well football has a funny way of changing momentum often and that is what would happen next.
The Seahawks trailing only 19-17 with all three timeouts decided to kick the ball away. Ted Ginn Jr. would take the kickoff and return it 102 yards to give the 49ers a 26-17 lead as the 49ers snatched the momentum back from the Seahawks. Then the Seahawks on offense were stopped so they decided to punt inside their own 10 instead of going for the win. Well Ginn Jr.returned the punt 55 yards for the touchdown to give the 49ers a 33-17 lead. The 49ers would hang onto to win the game 33-17 despite having just eight first downs all game. Alex Smith was 15-20 passing for just 124 yards with 22 rushing yards and a touchdown. Frank Gore was shutdown as he ran for just 59 yards on 22 carries. For the Seahawks Jackson finished 21 for 37 for 197 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Lynch was shut down rushing for only 33 yards on 13 carries. The Seahawks defense came to play but unfortunatly the offense or special teams didn't. The 49ers didn't do much on offense either and they will be in for a long season unless they are more agressive offensively. The Seahawks were a team with no offensive rythym all game long and that cost them today against the divisonal foe 49ers.
All in all, the Seahawks have so much work to do offensively. The offensive line played pretty bad but the play of Lynch and Jackson makes them look worse than they truly are. The Seahawks defense played great against the run but still recorded zero sacks or turnovers which in the NFL won't get the job done one bit. The Seahawks dropped one of the few winnable games on their early part of their schedule. Now the Seahawks will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh in a super bowl XL rematch from the 2005 season. The Seahawks under second year coach Pete Carroll have a ton of work to do as they better figure it out soon. If the Seahawks don't figure it out soon expect a ton of fans to start openly rooting against them in a "suck for Luck" type of campaign. What a contrast from just a year ago.
Observations:
- The Seahawks offense did exactly what I thought they do which was absolutely nothing. This wasn't all Jackson's fault but he does hang onto the ball way too long. Jackson ended up with decent stats posting a qb rating of 78.3 but he didn't do enough in the passing game. Jackson finished with just 5.3 YPA which is what he did in the preseason. Jackson can't get the ball downfield and with teams loading up to stop the run this is going to be a long year for the Seahawks.
Jackson was also sacked sacaked five times. Part of that was the offensive lines fault as they were blocking and the other part is that Jackson hangs onto the ball way too long which causes all these sacks. Next week against "Blitzburgh" Jackson better get rid of the ball quickly or the Seahawks are going to be in for a long day. Jackson may have had just one interception which was a hail marry but when you aren't moving the ball that does you no good.
- The Seahawks have a star in safety Earl Thomas. Thomas will most likely be the next Seahawk who makes the pro bowl who haven't have a pro bowler since 2008. Thomas was all over the field recording eight tackls. Thomas was also a big reason why the 49ers made no big plays. Vernon Davis had just five catches for 47 yards as the Seahawks bottled him up pretty good. Having Thomas also helped the Seahawks run defense against Frank Gore.
Gore had just 59 yards(2.7 YPC) including getting stuffed several times for losses down in the redzone. Thomas is an electric player for the Seahawks and he'll probably end up being Carroll's best draft pick. In today's NFL you need a play making safety who is all over the field and that is exactly what Thomas is.
- For all the praise Lynch received this past offseason for that great run he had against the Saints in the playoffs many forgot just how disappointing he was last year. Like Jackson this isn't all his fault as the line simply isn't opening up enough holes for him to run through. Lynch also isn't helping matters with his constant dancing in the backfield and dropping passes out of the backfield as well. For a power back Lynch spends way too much time dancing in the backfield.
Lynch finished with 33 yards(2.5 YPC) against the 49ers which should come to no surprise to anyone. In 15 games with the Seahawks counting the playoffs Lynch has averaged under 4.0 YPC in 10 games. He was under 3.0 YPC in seven games which shows he isn't getting the job done. He has rushed under 50 yards in nine games, under 40 yards in six games in his brief Seahawks career. He has been denied out of the end zone in 10 games. So for all the noise about that run in the playoffs which by the way was terrific that overshadowed the fact that Lynch has been a total disaster since joining the Seahawks. The offensive line isn't very good but Lynch isn't helping that line out with all the dancing that he does in the backfield.
- Carroll is obviously trying to rebuild with this roster or he wouldn't have let Matt Hasselbeck go. The Seahawks lost a game in which their defense allowed just eight first downs to a crappy 49ers team which is headed nowhere. The Seahawks offense was that bad today and the special teams basically gave up 17 points today with the offense allowing another three points.
Look for fans to get on Carroll this season as he didn't help himself with the fans by getting rid of so many key veteran players. I honestly believe Carroll has this franchise moving in the right direction. He had the defense ready and in the second half the offense made some adjustments and started to move the ball. Jackson played just well enough to avoid any quarterback controversy but not well enough to land the victory for the Seahawks.
In conclusion, this was a key loss for the Seahawks losing in their division. I'm not talking about future years for this year the Seahawks needed that win over their divisional rivals. The Seahawks will travel next week to the defending AFC champions Steelers in a game that will see them be heavy underdogs. There is a very good chance the Seahawks start the year off 0-2 which is why today's loss was so hard to take. The defense played pretty good today and the Seahawks still couldn't win the game. The offense better improve as will the special teams or this is going to be a long season. The city of Seattle after enduring six months of crappy baseball I'm sure won't have the patience to go through four months of crappy football. The Seahawks better start winning or the city of Seattle will start talking MLS instead of the sports that have been here for close to 40 years.
