Huskies lose starting point guard Abdul Gaddy for season

By Kshell

The #23 Washington Huskies(10-3,2-0) were riding high after a rare Los Angeles sweep, jumping back in the rankings and seeing Senior forward Mathew Bryan-Amaning named Pac-10 player of the week. Well time to regroup for the Huskies as they suffered by far their worst loss of the season. At the end of practice today Abdul Gaddy tore his ACL thus ending his season immediately. How the Huskies react to this injury will determine the rest of the season.

What the Huskies lose in Gaddy is experience at the point guard position. Gaddy has 42 career starts and this year came into his own as a shooter. Gaddy on the year was averaging 8.5 points per game, 3.8 assists to just 1.2 turnovers a game while shooting 50.0% from the field, making a three pointer a game shooting 40.6% from three point range and shooting 81.8% from free throws.

Losing Gaddy hurts the teams strength they have over other teams. With Gaddy, Venoy Overton and Isaiah Thomas the Huskies have three terrific guards who can handle the ball. Overton the Senior is Romar's ace up his sleeve that Romar would love to keep as the sixth man. With Overton you have a terrific defender who averages almost a steal and a half per game. Overton can't get in foul trouble with Gaddy gone. Since Overton probably won't start who will is the question?

Well it will most likely be a rotation of three players Terrence Ross, Scott Suggs and C.J. Wilcox. All three players have shown flashes in the past but must be more consistent. Look for Ross who currently only averages 13.7 minutes a game but is a great scorer. Ross was huge in the Huskies overtime win over the USC Trojans scoring 18 points. Wilcox is a great shooter but is recovering from an injury himself. Suggs is the veteran of the group but tends to be passive against good teams.

Losing Gaddy is a huge loss for the Huskies this year but not the end of the world. Going into the year the Huskies were 10 deep and now they are only nine deep. Like I said look for Romar to rotate who he starts in place of Gaddy. Ultimately Overton may not start but will finish the games for the Huskies. The Huskies still have Isaiah Thomas, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Justin Holiday and Venoy Overton which most teams in the Pac-10 would kill for. Romar still has the best team in the Pac-10 just a shame for Abdul Gaddy's career going forward.
