The 2nd stage of this years MLS Re-Entry draft took place earlier today with 11 players selected. The Colorado Rapids selected defender Tyrone Marshall who was the only Sounder available for the Re-Entry draft. Seattle selected goalkeeper Chris Seitz from the Philadelphia Union and later traded him to FC Dallas for a 4th Round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Other selections made today were Josh Wolff to D.C. United, Jimmy Conrad to Chivas USA, Ryan Cochrane to the New England Revolution, Juan Pablo Angel to the LA Galaxy, Cory Gibbs to the Chicago Fire, Frankie Hejduk to Sporting Kansas City (later traded to LA for Luke Sassano), Jeff Cunningham to the Columbus Crew, Luke Sassano to the LA Galaxy (later traded to Sporting KC for Frankie Hejduk) and Fred to the New England Revolution.
In his two seasons with the Sounders, Marshall made 46 appearances for the Rave Green and scored 3 goals. He was aquired for Toronto FC on February 10, 2009, was partnered up at center back with Jhon Kennedy Hurtado all the way through the first half of the 2010 season. After Jeff Parke signed with the club and Hurtado missed the rest the 2010 season, Marshall was dropped to the bench which paired Jeff Parke with Patrick Ianni for the last half of the season. Marshall's final appearance for the Sounders came on November 6th in a playoff defeat to his former team, the LA Galaxy.
One of the biggest selections made in the Re-Entry draft was Juan Pablo Angel who was of course, selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Angel began his career with Athletico Nacional in Colombia in 1993 where he played 5 seasons and 45 goals for the club in 158 matches. He then moved to Argentina and spent 3 seasons with River Plate scoring 46 goals in 96 matches. He also played in the English Premier League for Aston Villa before spending the last 4 seasons with the New York Red Bulls as their designated player. A couple other big names in the Re-Entry draft were, Jeff Cunningham who was taken by the Crew and Fred who was taken by New England. After the draft, as I said earlier, LA traded Luke Sassano to Sporting KC for Frankie Hejduk and also traded Tristan Bowen to rivals Chivas USA. This is the first time that a homegrown player was traded since the deal came into place. And of course, the Sounders traded Seitz to Dallas. If a player is not under contract, the drafting club will be required to make a genuine offer to the player within a week.
