This week the newly ranked #23 Washington Huskies(3-1, 1-0) fresh off their upset of then #8 Stanford Cardinal are looking to have an even bigger upset this week. The Huskies travel down to Eugene to take on the #2 Oregon Ducks(5-0, 2-0) as they are looking for their first win in this series since 2003. The Huskies still lead the all-time series comfortably 58-41-5 despite losing eight in a row. This will be the first time both these teams will square off as ranked teams since 2000 when the #20 Oregon Ducks defeated the #6 Washington Huskies 23-16. The last time the Huskies won where both teams were ranked was back in 1990 when the #17 Huskies blew out the #19 Ducks 38-17. In fact only 1990, 1995, and 2000 were the only years these teams have squared off where both were ranked since 1990 which is pretty incredible. The Ducks are used to winning big national spotlight games while the Huskies are still trying to figure that out. A win down in Eugene would be Steve Sarkisian's biggest win of his young coaching career.
If the Huskies were to pull off the upset they'd need a big game from Keith Price. Price is returning to the stadium where he made his first career college start as a freshman against #1 Oregon back in 2010. In that game Price was 14-28 passing for 127 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. It was a 25-16 game in the middle of the third until it turned ugly. Last year against Oregon Price struggled badly as he was 24-35(68.6%) passing for only 143 yards(4.1 YPA) with two touchdowns and two costly interceptions. Price for the season is 75-127 passing(59.1%) for 737 yards(5.8 YPA) with five touchdowns to two interceptions. Those are well below his capabilities as his offensive line must buy him some time so he can finally make some plays. Price hasn't thrown for over 200 yards this year since the first week of the season.
At quarterback the Ducks once again have a new quarterback in Marcus Mariota who is only a freshman. This will be the third different starting quarterback in four years for Chip Kelly. His two most recent starting quarterbacks beat out the previous years backup as well. Mariota this year is 99-144(68.8%) passing for 1,103 yards(7.7 YPA) with 11 touchdowns to four interceptions. He has also ran for 181 yards with a touchdown.
His backup quarterback Bryan Bennett who many expected to be the starter is 13-23(56.5%) passing for 135 yards(5.9 YPA) with one touchdown and two interceptions. He has ran for 57 yards and three touchdowns on the year. Oregon has plenty of weapons to make these quarterbacks look good including the most exciting player in all of college football.
The most exciting player in the game today is sophomore play maker De'Anthony Thomas. Last year against the Huskies he only carried the ball one time but scored on a nine yard touchdown run. He also ran back a kickoff 69 yards to set up a score. This year Thomas has rushed for 302 yards on 31 carries(9.7 YPC) with five touchdowns. He also has 19 receptions for 193 yards(10.2 YPC) with three touchdowns. He has four kickoff returns for 53 yards(13.3 YPR) and 10 punt returns for 150 yards(15.0 YPR) including a 48 yarder. Add it all up and Thomas is averaging 139.6 yards a game.
The other weapons for the Ducks include Bralon Addison who has 15 receptions for 185 yards(12.3 YPC) with a touchdown. Colt Lyerla has nine receptions for 118 yards(13.1 YPC) with two touchdowns. Keanon Lowe has 12 receptions for 112 yards(9.3 YPC) with a touchdown. Dwayne Stanford has 11 receptions for 106 yards(9.6 YPC). When you add it all up the Ducks have five different guys with double digit receptions already and six guys who are over 100 yards already. Eight different Ducks have also caught a touchdown pass this year showing you the kind of depth they have.
The Huskies might be one of the few teams on Oregon's schedule who could make an argument they have more talented skill players than Oregon. They are led by sophomore wide receiver Kasen Williams. Williams last year against the Ducks caught six passes for 79 yards(13.2 YPC) with a touchdown plus a 53 yard reception as well. Williams on the year has 25 receptions for 292 yards(11.7 YPC) with three touchdowns. He is coming off of a career game last week where he had 10 receptions for 129 yards(12.9 YPC) with the game winning touchdown against Stanford.
The other standout the Huskies have is tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins who the Ducks shut down last year. He was held to just one catch which went for negative yardage. For the year Seferian-Jenkins has 22 receptions for 221 yards(10.0 YPC) with a touchdown. Outside of Seferian-Jenkins and Williams the Huskies are lacking production. Kevin Smith has six receptions for 68 yards(11.3 YPC) hopefully this week he can return to health. DiAndre Campbell has four receptions for 38 yards(9.5 YPC) with a touchdown reception. Jaydon Mickens has five receptions for 33 yards(6.6 YPC) as he is a true freshman. Kendyl Taylor has two receptions for 17 yards(8.5 YPC) as he is being moved to running back this week. The Huskies going forward need another receiver to step it up to get the passing game going.
Despite issues with the offensive line Bishop Sankey has had a great back to back weeks. Last year against Oregon he had two carries for 21 yards(10.5 YPC) with a 19 yard rush. This year Sankey has 329 yards rushing on 64 carries(5.1 YPC) with four touchdowns. He also has six receptions for 39 yards(6.5 YPC).
He is coming off of a career game last week against the 3rd rushing defense in the nation Stanford. He ran for 144 yards on 20 carries(7.2 YPC) with a 61 yard touchdown run on a 4th and 1. Backing up Sankey now is Taylor who last week ran for only nine yards on four carries. He also has Erich Wilson who has ran for 119 yards on 21 carries(5.7 YPC). The Huskies also have big back Dezden Petty who has ran for 65 yards on 24 carries(2.7 YPC) as he picked up a crucial fourth and one last week. The Huskies running game is in pretty good hands despite injuries and losing Chris Polk to the NFL.
The Ducks under Chip Kelly once again feature the best running game in the Pac-12 if not college football. This year they are led by Kenjon Barner along with De'Anthony Thomas who I already mentioned. Barner against the Huskies in 2010 ran for 60 yards on only nine carries(6.7 YPC) including a 30 yard touchdown run. Last year against the Huskies Barner ran for 41 yards on 10 carries(4.1 YPC) with a one yard touchdown to open up the second half.
This season Barner has rushed for 605 yards on 95 carries(6.3 YPC) with nine touchdowns. He also has 11 receptions for 111 yards(10.1 YPC) with a touchdown this season. He will eventually make his money playing on Sunday's in the NFL as he is a talented back who the Huskies must contain to have any shot at keeping this game close.
The Ducks have another running back who has done well in Byron Marshall who has ran for 199 yards at a 5.0 YPC clip with two touchdowns. Through five games this year the Ducks are rushing for 1,535 yards(307 YPG) with 21 touchdowns. In 2010 the Ducks ran for 279 yards at a 5.1 YPC clip with six rushing touchdowns against the Huskies. In 2011 the Ducks ran for 212 yards at a 5.4 YPC clip with three rushing touchdowns. The Ducks ability to run the ball down the Huskies throats is the main reason why they have dominated this series lately.
This rivalry is officially a friendly rivalry again since both coaches are friends with each other. This is like when Don James and Rich Brooks were friends. Only now Kelly is playing the role of James and Sarkisian is playing the role of Brooks. Sarkisian has another chance to showcase his program and prove to everyone his program is going in the right direction. Even if the Huskies don't win but are competitive along with last weeks upset of Stanford would indicate that. For the second time this year the Huskies are playing the #2 team in the nation on the road. For the third time in five games the Huskies are playing a top 10 opponent. For Sarkisian he has nothing to lose and everything to gain with a win over Oregon. He can make a lot of friends with a win. On the flip side another embarrassing blowout loss would start the negative chatter once again.
The Huskies have an opportunity to put a scare into the Ducks and then try and upset them. The Huskies have first down NFL draft picks on their roster just like the Ducks do. The Huskies program last year saw themselves ranked and were on ESPN on the road in a big game. They lost to Stanford 65-21 as they are hoping to avoid such a letdown again. For the bulk of this rivalry the Huskies have dominated the Ducks but in the past decade the Ducks have been the ones dominating. Can the Huskies steal back the rivalry down in Eugene? Can Sarkisian pull off back to back top 10 wins something the Huskies haven't done since 1982 when in late November they defeated #9 UCLA 10-7 at home then defeated #3 Arizona State Sun Devils 17-13 on the road. They then famously lost to 2-7-1 Washington State to get bounced from the Rose Bowl. So it has been 30 years since the Huskies won back to back weeks against top 10 opponents. Perhaps this can be the year where the Huskies do it again.

Huskies hope to end 4 game losing streak vs #8 Stanford
By Kshell
The Washington Huskies(2-1,0-0) are hosting the #8 Stanford Cardinal(3-0,1-0) on a special Thursday night game on ESPN which the Huskies will be wearing the black uniforms. This is a big game for the Huskies as they start conference play in probably the second toughest conference in America. The Huskies will also have some revenge on the mind as the Stanford Cardinal have dominated this series in recent memory winning four in a row including last seasons embarrassing 65-21 loss to then #7 Stanford as the Huskies were ranked #22 going into that game. The Huskies were 5-1 heading into that game and that loss started a trend where the Huskies lost five of their last seven games of the season.
If the Huskies are to pull off the upset they will need a big game from Keith Price. Price this year is 56-90(62.2%) passing for 560 yards(6.2 YPA) with four touchdowns to one interception. He has had to deal with a injured offensive line and injuries to his receivers as well. Basically Price has had to overcome a lot in his junior season. Last year in the loss to the Cardinal Price was 23-36(63.9%) passing for 247 yards(6.9 YPA) with a touchdown and a costly interception that was ran back for a touchdown. Price was able to move the ball on the Cardinal last year just couldn't finish off drives. Hopefully this year Price can finish off the drives as he is 8-1 at home in his Husky career and the Huskies do tend to play a lot better at home compared to on the road.
The Huskies offense despite the injuries still feature plenty of talent headlined by super sophomore tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and wide receiver Kasen Williams. The Huskies also start true sophomore running back Bishop Sankey as well.
First I'll start by talking about the talented tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins who has 20 receptions this year for 211 yards(10.6 YPC) with a touchdown. In the loss to Stanford last year Seferian-Jenkins had five receptions for 77 yards. Seferian-Jenkins is a match up nightmare for every opponent he faces this year.
Then at receiver you have Kasen Williams who this year has 15 receptions for 163 yards(10.9 YPC) with two touchdowns. Williams has had two good games and one stinker at LSU. Williams is a touchdown machine though have caught eight in 15 career games so far. The receiver opposite of Williams will be junior Kevin Smith who in two games this year has six receptions for 68 yards(11.3 YPC). The Huskies will need another receiver to step up whether that be Jaydon Mickens, DiAndre Campbell, Kendyl Taylor or Marvin Hall. One of those four guys needs to develop into that consistent number three option.
For the running game the Huskies will turn to Bishop Sankey. Sankey on the year has ran for 185 yards(4.2 YPC) with three touchdowns. Last year in the loss to Stanford Sankey ran for 31 yards on five carries(6.2 YPC). Backing up Sankey is Erich Wilson who has ran for 119 yards(5.7 YPC) and has the longest run of the season so far which was 31 yards. Last year despite the loss Chris Polk busted two long runs against the Cardinal as he ran for 144 yards with two touchdowns. The Huskies must have some sort of run game to overcome this Stanford defense which has been pretty good this year.
The Stanford defense currently ranks 3rd in the nation against the run. They held the then #2 USC Trojans to 26 yards rushing on 24 carries as they flat out dominated the Trojans. This year the Cardinal have yet to allow 20 points in their three games as they are allowing only 14.7 points per game.
This defense creates pressure which leads to turnovers as they have already forced six interceptions this season. They are led by Ed Reynolds who already has three interceptions for 144 yards including a touchdown. The Cardinal defense have also shut down the Huskies in the Sarkisian era holding the Huskies to 14 points, then shutting them out at home in 2010 and last year the Huskies only scored 21 points against this defense. The Huskies must find a way to score on this defense as the Cardinal offense has also had their way with the Huskies in recent years.
The Cardinal offense is led by Stepfan Taylor who this year has ran for 338 yards(5.0 YPC) with three touchdowns. He also has 10 receptions for 89 yards with a touchdown. Taylor has also destroyed the Huskies in the past as well. Taylor as a freshman ran for a touchdown against the Huskies then started to do damage on them in 2010 and 2011. In 2010 Taylor ran for 102 yards on 20 carries(5.1 YPC) with two touchdowns. Then last year Taylor ran for 138 yards on only 10 carries(13.8 YPC) with a touchdown. The offense runs through Taylor as the Cardinal have pounded the ball on the Huskies the last four years.
The Cardinal will have a new quarterback in this series as Andrew Luck defeated the Huskies the last three years. This year the quarterback is Josh Nunes who will be making his first career start on the road. This year Nunes is 47-88(53.4%) passing for 615 yards(7.0 YPA) with six touchdowns and three interceptions. His leading target is tight end Zach Ertz who has nine receptions for 146 yards(16.2 YPC) with a touchdown. The Cardinal will try to establish the run game and work the play action passes against this new Huskies defense led by new coordinator Justin Wilcox.
The Huskies defense this year has played well in two games and terrible in the other game. The defense has been killed by the Cardinal the last three years in the Sarkisian era allowing 34 points, 41 points and last year giving up 65 points. This defense does have some talent led by senior corner back Desmond Trufant who has played really well this year. They also have super talented true freshman Shaq Thompson who is all over the field and he could see some action at running back.
The Huskies defense in the past especially against ranked opponents have been blown out. The defense has allowed 298 points in their last six meetings against ranked opponents all of which are losses. That is an average of 49.7 points per game which is completely unacceptable. For the Huskies to take the next step they must start showing they can compete in these type of games.
This is a huge game in the Steve Sarkisian era as his tenure appears to be at a cross roads. A win tomorrow proves the Huskies are indeed moving in the right direction as a program. While another blowout loss with #2 Oregon and #13 USC looming could start getting some uncomfortable talk surrounding Sarkisian. Starting with this embarrassing 41-0 loss to Stanford in 2010 the Huskies are 1-9 in their last 10 games against ranked opponents losing by an average of 28.2 points. The Huskies have lost six games in a row to ranked opponents all of which were by double figures. In three games against Stanford the Huskies have lost 34-14, 41-0, and 65-21 last year. Sarkisian is in his fourth year and this is a huge game for him. The 41-3 loss to #4 LSU Tigers was a bad start to showcase how this program has made "progress". Hopefully tomorrow Sarkisian can start pulling off these upsets like he did his first year and a half on the job.
This is a big game for the Huskies program on a special Thursday night game on ESPN. This is a chance for this program to finally show they are ready for big time wins on big network games. This is a chance for Sarkisian to finally silence his critics with a win over a good top 10 opponent who is very beatable. The Huskies have the talent to beat the Cardinal and they are at home. Plus in the past when facing a quarterback making his first career road start that used to always mean a Huskies win. The Huskies program has a great opportunity tomorrow to show they are ready to compete with the top tier teams in the conference. Should be a fun atmosphere which I'll be there in person to witness. The Huskies are hoping this year against the Cardinal it's a different story unlike the last four years. We'll know a lot more about the Sarkisian tenure at Washington after tomorrow that is for sure.

Washington takes on Portland State for first ever meeting
By Kshell
This Saturday the Portland State Vikings(1-1,0-1) travel to Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies(1-1,0-0) for the first time ever. The Vikings are led by third year head coach Nigel Burton who led the Vikings to their first winning season since 2006 when he guided the Vikings to a 7-4 record last year. Burton is a former Husky for those who don't know as I talked about him yesterday as he is facing his old team. Burton was a big part of the Huskies upset win in 1996 over BYU who was led by quarterback Steve Sarkisian. Now Sarkisian has a chance to get even with Burton and more important turn this season around. The Huskies are at their lowest point in the Sarkisian era fresh off of a 41-3 defeat to #3 LSU Tigers as injuries on the offensive line continue to add up. The Huskies will have a challenge stopping the Vikings run which under Burton runs the pistol attack.
Last year the Vikings were third in the nation in FCS in running the football. This year they added Maryland transfer DJ Adams. While at Maryland as a freshman Adams ran for 225 yards(3.5 YPC) with 11 touchdowns. As a sophomore he ran for 174 yards(4.4 YPC) with four touchdowns. This year with Portland State he has ran for 226 yards(7.5 YPC) with three touchdowns. In a 45-37 loss last week to North Dakota saw Adams with a huge game. He ran for 144 yards on only 16 carries(9.0 YPC) with a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 31 yards in the game as well. His backup is Shaquille Richard who has ran for 77 yards(3.5 YPC) on the season. Richard also has three receptions for 117 yards including an 80 yard touchdown on a screen. The Vikings will hope to run the football to control the clock especially against a Huskies team who has allowed 441 yards rushing(220.5 yards per game) on 92 carries(4.8 YPC) with five touchdowns.
Meanwhile the Washington Huskies are finding out that life after Chris Polk has been a lot more difficult transition than life without Jake Locker last year. Last week the Huskies as a team ran for 26 yards on 24 carries(1.1 YPC). Bishop Sankey so far this year has been terrible as has his offensive line. For the year Sankey has 82 yards rushing on 30 carries(2.7 YPC) with a touchdown and a fumble in the red zone. He has four receptions for 30 yards this year. With Sankey struggling the Huskies could give some carries to Erich Wilson who this year has ran for 47 yards on just six carries(7.8 YPC). The Huskies must find a way to run the ball or quarterback Keith Price will get killed back there. If the Huskies can't run the ball effectively against an FCS school then they aren't running the ball at all this year. Look for Sarkisian to try and get the run game going so the Huskies have some positive momentum heading into what is shaping up to be the biggest game of his career when the Huskies host Stanford on September 27th on a Thursday.
Unlike last year the Vikings have a quarterback who can throw the ball. On the year Kieran McDonagh is 29 for 57(50.9%) passing for 493 yards(8.6 YPA) with five touchdowns to only two interceptions. McDonagh has also ran for 27 yards and has only been sacked twice all year. His favorite target is Justin Monahan who missed the first game but had a monster game last week. Monahan caught six passes for 156 yards(26.0 YPC) with two touchdowns last week. Another running back Justin Lilley has two receptions for 76 yards including a 40 yard touchdown. Under Burton the Vikings run a lot of Pistol with big plays in the passing game as they like to feature their three running backs in the passing game. They also have slot receiver Keitrell Anderson who has seven receptions for 41 yards(5.9 YPC) as he leads the team in receptions. The Vikings offense so far this year is averaging 37.5 PPG as they can beat you with throwing and running the ball.
Sarkisian is looking to get his passing attack on track which has been held out of the end zone for seven straight quarters. The Huskies strength the passing game led by Keith Price is the Vikings weakness. Last week North Dakota quarterback Marcus Hendrickson came off the bench to throw for 294 yards on 16-25(64.0%) passing with a school record six touchdowns. Price needs a bounce back after suffering his worst game as a Husky. For the year Price is 42-71(59.2%) passing for 379 yards(5.3 YPA) with one touchdown and one interception. His leading receivers are tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins who has 15 receptions for 133 yards(8.9 YPC). Kasen Williams has nine receptions for 94 yards(10.4 YPC) with a touchdown. While Kevin Smith has six receptions for 68 yards(11.3 YPC). The Huskies offense needs to make more explosive plays as their longest play of the year is a Price completion to Kevin Smith last week for 22 yards. The Huskies have only one run over 20 yards this year and only three passes over 20 yards this year. Hopefully Sarkisian opens up the play book a little so the Huskies offense can get some confidence going.
With all due respect to Portland State this game isn't about them. This game is about the Washington Huskies finding their offensive identity as they try to head into Pac-12 play with some momentum. The disaster down in LSU counts as only one loss and if the Huskies can regain their confidence back going 2-1 into conference play that is all anyone could have asked for. The Vikings will have upset on their mind as the Eastern Washington Eagles who the Vikings defeated last year nearly defeated the Huskies last year and the Washington State Cougars last week. This is a big opportunity for Burton to showcase himself as a head coach to his former school and throughout the country. With that said this shouldn't be a close game and if the Huskies have any ounce of pride they'll destroy the Vikings in the first half. The Huskies must find their offensive identity soon as they face four straight ranked opponents after this week. Should be a fun one Saturday afternoon as the Vikings take on the Huskies for the first time ever.

Huskies embarrassed by #3 LSU Tigers 41-3!
By Kshell
The Washington Huskies(1-1,0-0) failed an early road test once again in the Steve Sarkisian era getting blown out 41-3 to #3 LSU Tigers(2-0,0-0) down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Huskies all offseason claimed they were ready to take the next step but reality sunk in as the Tigers destroyed them every facet of the game. This was never a contest as the Huskies failed to score a touchdown. Quarterback Keith Price had his worst game as a Husky and the running game averaged 1.1 YPC as they rushed for only 26 yards after having mostly negative rushing yards all game long. This was a huge step back for a program hoping to take that next step.
On the opening kickoff the Huskies received a break as the Tigers fumbled on their own 20 which was forced by Taz Stevenson and recovered by Thomas Tutogi. On the first play the Price hit Kasen Williams on a wide receiver screen for a gain of four yards to the Tigers 16 yard line. That is where the positives for the Huskies would end. On the following play Price would hit a wide open Bishop Sankey over the middle but Sankey dropped the pass. Facing a third and six from the 16 Price would hit freshman Jaydon Mickens in the corner for what appeared to be a touchdown. Instead Mickens had bobbled the pass and was correctly ruled an incomplete pass. The Huskies would have to settle for a Travis Coons 34 yard field goal attempt which he made as the Huskies would lead 3-0 which should have been 7-0.
After the Huskies led 3-0 the battle of field position took place. The Huskies three and outed the Tigers but Tigers punter Brad Wing had a 62 yard punt pinning the Huskies on their own four yard line. The Huskies would go three and out as Korey Durkee had a 32 yard to the Huskies 38 yard line. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger would complete a pass to a wide open James Wright on a slant for 17 yards to the 21 yard line. Then on the following play which reminded Husky fans of the Alamo Bowl loss Alfred Blue would rush for a 21 yard touchdown run that looked rather easy as the Tigers led 7-3.
On the following series the Huskies offense again went three and out as they failed to record a first down on their first three drives. The Tigers offense would stall around the 50 yard line and this time Wing's punt went in the end zone. On first down Price hit Mickens for a gain of nine yards. On the following play big back Dezden Petty would rush for a yard giving the Huskies their first first down of the game. Which things quickly fell apart for the Huskies who saw Price get sacked on third and five. Durkee would shank the punt for 18 yards giving the Tigers the ball on the Huskies 47 yard line.
Starting from the the Huskies 47 yard line Kenny Hilliard would rush for four yards while 10 more yards were tacked on for defensive holdling. Michael Ford would rush for eight yards to the 25 yard line then would rush for eight more yards to the 17 yard line. Spencer Ware ran for seven yards to the Huskies 10 yard line. On second and three Ware would rush for eight yards to the two yard line. On first and goal from the two the Tigers put in another running back as J.C.Copeland plunged forward for a gain of one yard. On second and goal from the one yard line Copeland finished the drive off with a touchdown to give the Tigers a 14-3 lead.
On that drive the Tigers ran the ball all seven times with four different tailbacks rushing for 37 yards. That was straight forward smash mouth football something the Huskies couldn't handle in the Nick Holt era and weren't handling now. After the first quarter the Tigers led 14-3 while out-gaining the Huskies 112-18 in total yards with seven first downs to just one for the Huskies. Price was 5-13 passing for only 21 yards. The Tigers had ran the ball 11 times for 65 yards(5.9 YPC) while the Huskies had ran the ball just three times for negative four yards(-1.3 YPC).
After another three and out by the Huskies offense the Tigers took over on their own 27 yard line. Facing a second and eight from the 29 yard line Mettenberger passed to Wright for a gain of 23 yards to the Huskies 45 yard line. Blue would rush for eight yards to the Huskies 37 yard line, then again for four yards to the 33 yard line. Hilliard would rush for four yards to the 29 yard line setting up a second and six. Mettenberger would hit Wright again for 22 yards setting up a first and goal from the 7 yard line. On back to back rushes to Hilliard which netted only three yards the Tigers were facing a third and goal from the four yard line. Mettenberger would complete a pass to Wright for three yards as Sean Parker tackled him at the one yard line. Facing a fourth and goal Les Miles decided to kick the 18 yard field goal to go up 17-3.
The Huskies offense facing a third and 15 from their own 12 showed somewhat of a pulse when Price hit Austin Seferian-Jenkins for a gain of 18 yards to the 33 yard line. That is all the Huskies offense would do as they would punt once again. The Tigers would take over from their own 30 yard line. Blue would start the drive with a four yard run to the 34 yard line. Mettenberger would hit Jarvis Landry for a gain of 20 yards to the Huskies 46 yard line. On second and eight from the 44 yard line Mettenberger would hit Blue for a 14 yard completion to the 30 yard line. Blue would rush for nine yards to the 21 yard, again for six yards to the 15 yard line. That is when the Huskies defense actually got tough as the Tigers once again had to settle for a 32 yard field goal to lead 20-3. On that drive Mettenberger was two for four passing for 34 yards on the drive.
With 5:03 left in the half if the Huskies were to make this a game they had to score on this drive. The drive started off with a sack as Price was facing a second and 21 from his own two yard line. Price would complete a 20 yard pass to Kevin Smith to their own 22 yard line. On third and one Price would hit Seferian-Jenkins in the flat for a gain of 10 yards to their own 32 yard line. Price would complete his third straight pass to Kasen Williams for a gain of seven yards to their own 39 yard line. The Huskies drive would soon stall out at the Tigers 46 yard line. The Tigers would kneel out the clock going into halftime leading 20-3 over the weakened Huskies who appeared lost all half.
The Huskies were thoroughly dominated throughout the half. The Tigers outgained the Huskies 232-80 in the first half with 13 first downs to five. Keith Price struggled passing 10-23( 43.4%) passing for only 81 yards(3.5 YPA). His main targets were Seferian-Jenkins who had four receptions for 31 yards. Kevin Smith had two for 25 yards while Williams only had two for 11 yards. Bishop Sankey was held to negative two yards rushing on four carries. The Huskies had nine carries for negative 11 yards rushing at halftime.
For the Tigers Zach Mettenberger was 9-14(64.2%) for 128 yards(9.1 YPA). James Wright was his main target with four receptions for 65 yards. Alfred Blue ran for 55 yards on nine carries including a touchdown as the Tigers dominated the Huskies in the first half. In the second half the Tigers wouldn't let up either.
The second half started off with the Huskies going three and out as the Tigers took over on their own 39 yard line. Blue started the series off with a 17 yard run to the Huskies 44 yard line. Mettenberger would rush for five yards to the Huskies 39 yard line. Blue would rush for nine yards to the 30 yard line. Mettenberger would hit Odell Beckham for a 24 yard gain to the six yard line. Blue would rush for three yards up the middle to the three yard line. Then Hilliard would cap the drive with a three yard touchdown run up the middle to give the Tigers a commanding 27-3 lead. The Huskies on the following drive would march down to the Tigers 30 yard line before Price would throw an interception on fourth down killing the only productive drive of the night for the Huskies.
Starting from their own 27 yard line the Tigers continued to pound the run as Ware would rush for nine yards. On second and 1 Ware would throw an incomplete pass on a halfback pass. Ware would rush for two yards to extend the chains to their own 38 yard line. On second and eight Ware would rush for six yards to their own 46 yard line. On third and two Ware would rush up the middle for seven yards to the Huskies 47 yard line. Blue would then take over rushing for 15 yards to the Huskies 32 yard line. Facing a third and 10 from the 32 Mettenberger would find a wide open Kadron Boone for a 32 yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 34-3 lead. Senior Justin Glenn allowed his man to burn him deep on the score as the defense once again reminded Husky fans of the Nick Holt years.
Starting from their own 20 yard line the Huskies were playing for pride at this point. After a five yard penalty by the Tigers, Price would hit Williams for a gain of eight yards to their own 33 yard line. On third and one, Kevin Smith would commit a false start which is inexcusable for a wide receiver. On third and six from the 30 yard line Price would hit Smith for a gain of 22 yards to the Tigers 48 yard line. Price on the following play would dump it off to Sankey for a gain of 10 yards to the Tigers 38 yard line. Sarkisian would call for two straight running plays which of course went nowhere set up third and seven from the 35 yard line. Price would throw back to back incomplete passes as the Huskies once again stalled.
The Tigers would go on a 13 play, 65 yard touchdown drive that ate up almost seven minutes as they once again pounded the ball down the Huskies throats. Hilliard would rush for four yards on the first two carries setting up a third and six. Mettenberger would complete another pass to Wright for 10 yards to their own 49 yard line. After a short gain, Ford would rush for 11 yards to the Huskies 37 yard line. For would rush for seven yards on his next two carries setting up a third and three from the 30 yard line. Hilliard would take back over rushing for six yards to the Huskies 24 yard line. Following play would rush for nine more yards to the Huskies 15 yard line. Hilliard would rush for seven more yards to the Huskies eight yard line. Fullback Connor Neighbors would rush up the middle for five yards to the Huskies three yard line. Hilliard would rush for two more yards setting up a third and goal from the one yard line. Hilliard would then cap the drive with a one yard touchdown plunge giving the Tigers a 41-3 lead.
The Huskies would lose 41-3 which marked their worst offensive performance since losing 41-0 to Stanford in October of 2010. The Huskies offense had only 183 yards total offense and had 26 yards rushing only 24 carries(1.1 YPC). Keith Price finished the day 17-36(47.2%) passing for 157 yards(4.4 YPA) with one interception. He was sacked four times losing 28 yards as he only ran once for a measly four yards. His main targets were Austin Seferian-Jenkins who had six receptions for 51 yards on the day. Kevin Smith caught four passes for 48 yards while Kasen Williams had only three receptions for 19 yards. Bishop Sankey had three receptions for 30 yards while Jaydon Mickens had one reception for nine yards with a costly bobble.
The ground game was pathetic as Sankey was held to 16 yards rushing on eight carries(2.0 YPC). If not for Erich Wilson rushing for 25 yards in garbage time the Huskies would have had negative rushing yards. Dezden Petty had nine yards rushing on seven carries(1.3 YPC). The Huskies offense was 4-16 on third downs while 1-3 on fourth downs. For a fourth year head coach who specializes in offense this was an unacceptable offensive performance by Sarkisian's offense who looked overmatched on Saturday.
Very efficient game for the Tigers who racked up 437 yards of total offense including 242 rushing. Their quarterback Zach Mettenberger outplayed Price as he was 12-18(66.6%) passing for 195 yards(10.8 YPA) with a touchdown and no interceptions. His main target was James Wright who had five receptions for 75 yards.
On the ground the Tigers abused the Huskies with a plethora of backs. Alfred Blue had 101 yards rushing on 14 carries(7.2 YPC) with a touchdown. Michael Ford ran for 48 yards on 10 carries(4.8 YPC). Kenny Hilliard ran for 46 yards on 13 carries(3.5 YPC) with two touchdowns. Spencer Ware had 38 yards on eight carries(4.8 YPC) as the Tigers ran the ball 52 times. The Tigers pounded the ball and played great defense two things the Huskies used to be great at. Two things the Huskies were terrible at today.
This was an embarrassing game for Sarkisian and the Huskies as they were once again outclassed on national t.v. showing America they aren't ready for these type of games. Many felt the Huskies didn't have a chance but the hope was the Huskies could compete which they didn't after blowing an early gift. The Tigers out played, out hustled, out coached, and had much more talent than the Huskies. The Tigers turned a big game into a non conference tune up game against a cupcake. The Tigers had more trouble with North Texas the week before than they did the Huskies this week which should tell you a lot about this pathetic performance. For those who watched this game they came away with two conclusions which was 1. The Tigers are going to once again be competing for a national championship and 2. The Huskies once again proved they are pretenders.
Observations:
- Remember when the Huskies were deep at running back? Remember when Husky fans mocked Coug fans for stealing Bishop Sankey? Yea about that.....
Sankey in his first career start had only 16 yards rushing on eight carries(2.0 YPC) with three catches for 30 yards but a big drop on the first series of the game. The rushing game has been terrible this year and with Jesse Callier out for the season it's on Sankey. Sankey for the season now has 30 carries for 82 yards(2.7 YPC) with a touchdown and a fumble. While last season he ran for 187 yards on only 28 carries(6.7 YPC). There are no explosive runs from Sankey like he had last year. It's a different world when teams key in on you vs when Polk wears the opponent down and you come in with fresh legs to pop a big run. If Sankey can't turn it around this year it will be a long year for the Huskies as they'll probably miss a bowl game if that happens.
- If Kasen Williams is to be that number one receiver he needs to make more explosive plays this year. In this game he had only three receptions for 19 yards(6.3 YPC) which isn't going to get the job done. He almost made a big play but had no sideline awareness as he didn't drag his feet for an incomplete pass on a fade pattern.
The Huskies are missing James Johnson badly as teams can double team Williams as Sarkisian's golden recruits in Mickens and Taylor have been awful through two games. For the year Williams has nine receptions for 94 yards(10.4 YPC) with his longest reception being 20 yards. Through the first two drives last week Williams had four receptions for 44 yards with a touchdown. Since then in the last seven quarters just five receptions for 50 yards which won't be getting the job done at all.
- Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a productive game with six receptions for 51 yards(8.5 YPC) with a long of 18 yards. Seferian-Jenkins was the only guy who seemed to not be rattled as he hanging onto the ball and managed to make catches in traffic unlike the rest of his teammates.
For the year Seferian-Jenkins already has 15 receptions for 133 yards(8.9 YPC) as Price obviously has a trust in him since he is the leading returning receiver for the Huskies. What I don't get is why Sarkisian doesn't target this big athlete in the red zone. On the opening drive the Huskies after attempting a wide receiver screen to Williams had a play for Sankey then a corner route to Mickens. They did that last week which bothered me as well as Seferian-Jenkins proved last year with six touchdown receptions he can be a great target in the red zone.
The big completions last year to Seferian-Jenkins so far aren't working this year as they mainly came on play action passes. Hard to have a play action when you can't run the football at all. Seferian-Jenkins though is the only bright spot on an offense that currently ranks 117th in the nation in total offense. He was a big land for Sarkisian in recruiting but unfortunately Sarkisian hasn't landed any big recruits who panned out on the offensive line so the offense is struggling.
- Well so much for Justin Wilcox being the messiah of defensive coaches after the Tigers just pounded the ball on the Huskies defense. The Huskies defense recorded no sacks and forced no turnovers(lone turnover was on special teams). The Tigers converted 7-12(58.3%) on third downs as they ran the ball 52 times for 242 yards(4.7 YPC) with four touchdowns.
The defense forced two punts in the first quarter then didn't force a punt again until the final possession of the game. The Tigers scored three touchdowns on their first three drives in the second half. The Huskies defense looked slow, weak, confused, etc basically like every other Huskies defense in the past decade has looked. Firing the defensive coordinator does no good if your head coach doesn't stress defense or recruit defense.
- Perhaps the most famous LSU Tiger alumni was there in future NBA hall of famer Shaquille O'Neal. O'Neal greeted the Huskies at their hotel on Thursday night and he came out to a standing ovation between the first and second quarter. While playing for the Tigers Shaq was a two-time all-american, two-time SEC player of the year and won national player of the year in 1991.
O'Neal would go on to great success in the NBA playing in six NBA Finals, winning four NBA championships, winning three finals MVP's while winning a regular season MVP. He was a 15-time all-star, three-time all-star game MVP and won the rookie of the year award. He was first-team all-NBA eight times and is a great person to have representing your school.
- If the Huskies had any chance at all this game it had to be led by junior quarterback Keith Price having a big day. Instead Price had a terrible day. He was 17-36 (47.2 %) passing for only 157 yards (4.4 YPA) with zero touchdowns and one interception.
Last year the worst completion percentage Price had in a game was 53.3% against Arizona. Only once was Price held out of the end zone all last year.
This was the first time in his career that he threw an interception without throwing a touchdown pass. This was only the second time in his career that he threw more interceptions in a game than touchdowns.
At halftime Price was 10-23 ( 43.4%) for only 81 yards (3.5 YPA) as the Huskies trailed 20-3.
For the year Price is 42-71 passing(59.2%) for 379 yards(5.3 YPA) with one touchdown and one interception. Since the first two drives of the San Diego State game him and the offense looks awful this year. The Huskies need Price to be great like he was last year to be a good team as they have way too many holes on their roster that he needs to hide with his great play. Otherwise this isn't a bowl team if Price is simply average.
- Speaking of average? Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian now falls to 20-20 as head coach. Sarkisian is making a bad habit out of getting blown out by ranked opponents lately. The Huskies have lost six straight games to ranked opponents and nine out of 10. The average margain of defeat in those games is 28.2 points which shows the Huskies aren't even competing.
This is Sarkisian's fourth year which means no more blaming Tyrone Willingham for your short comings. He has already used up his one free fire your assistant coach and keep your job card. The offense was a joke as was his safe play calling. His offense which was his "specialty" hasn't scored a touchdown in seven quarters. Last drought Sarkisian had without a touchdown was eight quarters when the Huskies were shutout second half of a 44-14 loss to #15 Arizona Wildcats, shutout the whole game vs #13 Stanford Cardinal 41-0 then held out of the end zone in the first half vs #1 Oregon Ducks as they trailed 18-6 in a 53-16 loss back in 2010.
The fact he has neglected the offensive line has to be a concern. The Huskies are desperately missing Colin Porter who was forced to retire. The recruiting losses of Zach Banner and Joshua Garnett really hurts right now as the offensive line which is the second most important part of your offense besides quarterback is a giant mess. The Huskies can't protect Keith Price, can't run the ball and can't catch the ball. What was supposed to be a strength looks absolutely terrible through two weeks which should fall on Sarkisian.
This loss was an embarrassment when it could have been a big opportunity for this program. Once again, Sarkisian isn't living up to promises he made in the offseason about "taking the next step". To take the next step you need to beat ranked opponents something UCLA and Arizona did under first year head coaches on Saturday. Something Oregon State also did on Saturday as well giving three Pac-12 teams who appeared to be average all had big wins. Meanwhile besides Colorado who everyone knew would be terrible the two worst looking teams in the conference are once again in the state of Washington. The Cougars have a built in excuse with Mike Leach being in his first year. Sarkisian is in his fourth year and nobody would accepted 20-20 record with a 38 point loss in year four the day he was hired so why are some accepting it now? The Huskies play a Big Sky team this week, then have a bye week before a three week stretch against ranked teams. That three week stretch could be the most important three week stretch of the Steve Sarkisian coaching era. If they Huskies continue to play like they have played the last two weeks we are headed towards an awful year. Hopefully the Huskies can turn it around quickly as I plan on making another bowl trip once again.
The Washington Huskies(1-1,0-0) failed an early road test once again in the Steve Sarkisian era getting blown out 41-3 to #3 LSU Tigers(2-0,0-0) down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Washington Huskies take on #3 LSU Tigers
By Kshell
The Washington Huskies(1-0,0-0) travel down to face the #3 LSU Tigers(1-0,0-0) in a key non conference game. The Huskies find themselves 23.5 point underdogs in this game and if they were to win would be the biggest upset in school history. The reason the Huskies are such large underdogs is due to how good the Tigers are. The Tigers played in the national title game last year and haven't lost a home game since October of 2009 when they barely lost to then #1 Florida Gators 13-3. So despite the daunting task and having not traveled to an SEC game in decades the Huskies are hoping in year four of Steve Sarkisian they can make this a game. The Huskies although lacking in talent in several key areas in comparison to the Tigers do have a strong passing game which can keep this game close.
The Huskies biggest advantage is quarterback Keith Price. The Tigers who are starting two freshman corner backs also recorded zero sacks last week in a 41-14 win over North Texas. Price last week in a 21-12 win over San Diego State was 25-35(71.4%) passing for 222 yards(6.3 YPA) with a touchdown while also rushing for 17 yards. Price had a 39 yard touchdown pass called back and a 15 yard scramble called back.
If the Huskies have any shot in this one it is the passing game. Wide receiver Kasen Williams who considered going to LSU had six receptions last week for 75 yards with a touchdown. The super sophomore must have a big day if the Huskies have any chance at all. Super sophomore tight end and future first round pick Austin Seferian-Jenkins had nine receptions for 82 yards last week. Seferian-Jenkins is a matchup nightmare for anyone and look for the Huskies to use him. The Huskies are hoping junior Kevin Smith who is now practiced all week can contribute in the passing game as he only had two receptions for 20 yards but has shown in the past he can make big plays. Then true freshman Jaydon Mickens who had only two receptions for 16 yards and Kendyl Taylor who had one reception for five yards must make big plays. After Price sets them up with the short passes those two along with Smith can hopefully beat their man deep.
For the Tigers last week they broke in a new quarterback Zach Mettenberger who will be a game manager. He was 19-26(73.1%) passing for 192 yards(7.4 YPA) with a touchdown and an interception. 17 of his passes went for less than five yards as the Tigers depend on their running game and defense to win games. His main target last week was Jarvis Landry who had eight receptions for 82 yards. Kadron Boone had two receptions for 46 yards including a 34 yard touchdown. Odell Beckman caught three passes for 30 yards. He also had four punt returns for 75 yards including a 70 yard punt return for a touchdown. The Tigers passing game won't excite fans but all head coach Les Miles is looking for is Mettenberger to take care of the ball and hit some key third downs as Miles looks to pound the rock like he did last week.
Last week against North Texas the Tigers ran the ball at will. Led by starting running back Kenny Hilliard who ran for 141 yards on just 13 carries(10.8 YPC) with two touchdowns. His backup did just fine as well as Alfred Blue ran for 123 yards on 16 carries(7.7 YPC). The tigers also saw Michael Ford rush eight times for 50 yards(6.3 YPC) while J.C. Copeland had four carries for 33 yards(8.3 YPC) with a touchdown. The Tigers ran the ball 46 times for 316 yards(6.9 YPC) with three touchdowns in their win. The Huskies in recent memory have been terrible against the run. They have also been terrible against the pass as well. Look for the Tigers to run the ball to wear down the Huskies in that humidity down in Louisiana . By running the ball the Tigers will also be controlling the clock which will keep Keith Price out of the game.
The first game in the post Chris Polk era was a disaster for the Huskies. First starting running back Jesse Callier blew out his ACL on a play where there was no defenders around him. So making his first career start is sophomore Bishop Sankey. Sankey last week ran for 66 yards on 22 carries(3.0 YPC) with a touchdown but a costly red zone fumble. This is a big chance for Sankey to make a name for himself as the Huskies will lean heavily on him this season at running back like they have done Chris Polk the last three years. It won't be easy as the Tigers last week held North Texas to 76 yards rushing on 35 rush attempts(2.2 YPC). Their defensive line features two guys who are expected to be first round picks. The Huskies are moving Erik Kohler back to right tackle as right tackle Ben Riva is out for this game. So James Atoe or Mike Criste will be making their first career start on the offensive line this week at right guard. Sarkisian is going to have to be creative to muster up a running game.
This is a big opportunity for the Huskies defense to show the nation they have improved under new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. In 2010 Wilcox almost upset the Tigers at LSU where his Tennessee Vols lost 16-14. The defense last year in big games on ABC/ESPN got lit up as they allowed 51 points to Nebraska on the road, 65 points to Stanford on the road and in the bowl game 67 points to Baylor. Once again the Huskies are in the big game as this game will air on ESPN. Their defense played well last week holding the Aztecs to 12 points and scoring a touchdown themselves. The only player on this roster who has played against the Tigers is senior captain Desmond Trufant. The Tigers weakness is their passing attack so Trufant and the rest of the secondary must create plays early so later they can help out in the run defense. For the Huskies to have a shot they need to create some turnovers like the defense did last week.
This is a big game in the Sarkisian era against the #3 team who is an SEC opponent in their house. If the Huskies were able to pull this off or even come close that is signs that the program is moving in the right direction. If let's say Sarkisian gets blown out again then he will enter Jim Lambright territory in 1998 where fans will start to grow tired of the blowouts. I see no reason why with a quarterback like Price the Huskies can't at least give the Tigers a scare. This is a great opportunity for these young guys to grow as well as they'll never face a more hostile environment than this going forward which can only help them this season and in 2013. This is a great opportunity that most college programs don't ever get the chance to achieve. The Huskies have a chance to show the nation that Husky football is officially back!

Huskies defense comes up big in 21-12 win over Aztecs!
By Kshell
The Washington Huskies(1-0,0-0) for the second straight season begin their year with a victory. They defeated San Diego State(0-1,0-0) 21-12 in a defensive battle something the Huskies haven't seen since the 2010 Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska 19-7. There was still some offense as Keith Price was 25-35 passing for 222 yards with a touchdown while also rushing for 17 yards. His main targets were the super sophomores of Kasen Williams who had six receptions for 75 yards with a touchdown and Austin Seferian-Jenkins who had nine receptions for 82 yards. The Huskies won this game despite not scoring a single offensive point after the first quarter. For Steve Sarkisian he is now 2-2 all-time in season openers as his program is hoping to take that next step that he promised all offseason.
After a bad kickoff coverage by the Huskies special teams the Aztecs began the ball on the Huskies 40 yard line. After three plays the Aztecs had the ball on the Huskies 28 yard line. Then everything fell apart after a poor snap behind Ryan Katz for a loss of 12 it got worse for the Aztecs. Facing a second and 22 Katz threw an interception to Tre Watson playing in his first game for the Huskies who returned it 34 yards to the Aztecs 35 yard line. So the Huskies took over with great field position. After an incomplete pass that is when Keith Price would get in a groove. Price would throw a quick screen to Kasen Williams who made the defender miss for a gain of 13 yards to the Aztecs 22 yard line. Price would then hit Austin Seferian-Jenkins on a screen for a gain of eight yards to the 14 yard line. After a one yard loss the Huskies were facing a key third and three which Price found true freshman Jaydon Mickens on a roll out for a gain of four yards to the Aztecs 11 yard line. The following play Price would connect with Seferian-Jenkins for a gain of nine yards to the Aztecs two yard line setting up a second and one from the two. The following play Bishop Sankey would rush it in for the touchdown from two yards out to give the Huskies an early 7-0 lead.
The Huskies defense kept the momentum with a three and out which was capped by a Desmond Trufant corner blitz for the sack. Taking over from their own 38 the Huskies went to work. After a Price completion to Jesse Callier that went nowhere and a Sankey run of five yards the Huskies were facing a third and six. That is when Price hit Williams over the middle, as Williams bobbled the ball he hauled the pass in for 11 yards to the San Diego State 47 yard line. On the following play Price would hit Williams again for 12 yards to the Aztecs 35 yard line. Price was red hot would hit his backup tight end Michael Hartvigson for a gain of five yards, Sankey would rush for three yards setting up a third and two from the Aztecs 27 yard line. On a play action pass Price would hit his fullback Jonathan Amosa for a gain of 10 yards to the Aztecs 17 yard line. Following play Price would hit Callier for a gain of nine yards to the Aztecs eight yard line. Callier could have scored a touchdown but on the play hurt his knee and fell down as no Aztecs defender was around him. On second and one from the eight yard line Sarkisian called another wide receiver screen similar to the Utah game last year where Price would hit Williams. Williams made the first defender miss as he scored a touchdown for the second straight season opener. For Price he was 11-12 passing for 88 yards with a touchdown. For Williams he had four receptions for 44 yards with a touchdown on the first two drives as those two were in midseason form already. Little did anyone know at the time that was the last time the Huskies offense would score for the rest of the game.
With the Huskies leading 14-0 the Aztecs would take over on their own 25 yard line. Josh Shirley would sack Ryan Katz for a loss of one setting up a 2nd and 11 from the 24 yard line. Walter Kazee would bust an 18 yard run to their own 42 yard line. After a five yard penalty Kazee would again rush for eight yards to their own 45 yard line setting up a second and seven. The Aztecs once again would feature Kazee as he would rush for eight yards to the Huskies 47 yard line as the quarter expired with the Huskies leading 14-0. To begin the second quarter the Aztecs used a little trickery.
When the Aztecs broke the huddle Tim Vizzi was already standing on the sidelines. No Huskies were over there so Ryan Katz quickly threw it deep to Vizzi who scored from 47 yards out. There was many problems with that play as you can't intentionally have a play with the act to deceive your opponent. Another problem was Sarkisian noticed what was going on and was signaling timeout to the ref which wasn't called. As it stood the Aztecs cut the lead to 14-6. Then head coach Rocky Long made his first of many head scratching calls as the Aztecs decided to go for two. Katz was sacked by Shirley in the backfield as the Aztecs failed on the two point play as the Huskies 14-6 led in the second.
The Huskies would drive to the Aztecs 23 yard line highlighted by a Sankey 20 yard run but a costly sack would move them out of field goal range. The Aztecs would drive to the Huskies 37 yard line before Katz had a pooch punt pinning the Huskies on their own eight yard line. Sankey began the drive with an eight yard run to the 16 yard line. After a Sankey run that went for a loss Price was facing another third down which he completed a 13 yard pass to Kevin Smith to the 26 yard line. On second down Price would hit Kendyl Taylor for a gain of six yards setting up a third down and four. Price still accurate as ever would hit Mickens across the middle for a gain of 12 yards to the 44 yard line. Next play Erich Wilson spelling Sankey and filling in for Callier would bust a 17 yard run to the Aztecs 39 yard line. This is when the controversy began as Price rolled out to his right threw up a bomb as Williams made an incredible 39 yard touchdown catch as he went up to get the ball. Only the play was called back due to a suspect offensive pass interference call. Huskies facing a 1st and 25 from their own 46 would see Price hit Seferian-Jenkins as he would break a tackle for 20 yards down the Atecs 34 yard line. Price would then scramble for a gain of 14 only for that play to be called back due to holding putting the ball back on the 50 as the Huskies faced second and 21. Price would scramble once again for 13 yards but finally threw an incomplete pass. Facing a fourth and eight from the 37 yard line with 47 seconds left Sarkisian elected to punt. The Huskies would go into the locker room up 14-6 but felt like they left some points on the board.
At halftime the Huskies led only 14-6 despite dominating the first half. The Huskies had out gained the Aztecs 220 yards to 121. The Huskies had 13 first downs to the Aztecs six. The Huskies were also efficient converting five of their seven third downs. They were led by Price who was 17-21(81.0%) passing for 146(7.0 YPA) yards with a touchdown. His main targets were Williams who had four receptions for 44 yards with the touchdown. Also found his tight end Seferian-Jenkins five times for 44 yards. Found true freshman Mickens on two third downs for two receptions for 16 yards. The Huskies running game was doing well as Sankey had 49 yards on nine carries with a touchdown while E. Wilson had 22 yards rushing on two carries. The Aztecs saw Katz go five for eight passing for 62 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
The Huskies stalled on their first possession. That is when the defense tried to take over the game. After a first down rushing the Aztecs were on their own 36 when Katz hit Colin Lockett for a gain of eight. On that play Huskies outside linebacker Prince Fuimaono made the play of the game. He stripped Lockett of the ball as many figured he was down so there was a hesitation at first but Will Shamburger scooped it up and rumbled down the sideline for the 44 yard touchdown. The play was challenged but there wasn't conclusive evidence and the Huskies led 21-6. On the following series from their own 31 the Aztecs were facing a third and 10 when Travis Feeney sacked Katz while forcing the fumble as the Huskies had recovered the ball on the Aztecs 19 yard line looking for the kill. Price immediately would hit Seferian-Jenkins for a gain of 15 yards down to the four yard line. In a failed play action attempt Price would get sacked at the seven yard line. It would only get worse for the Huskies as Sankey fighting for extra yardage would fumble on the seven yard line which the Aztecs recovered as the Huskies wasted a great opportunity.
The Huskies defense would record a stop on the Aztecs but due to a 50 yard punt the Huskies had the ball on their own 22 yard line. Facing a third and nine from the 23 yard line Price would hit Williams over the middle for a gain of 20 yards and would tack on 15 more yards as the Aztecs had a personal foul for ripping Williams helmet off. On the 42 yard line Price would hit Seferian-Jenkins for a gain of 11 yards to the 31 yard line. Sankey would rush for three yards to the Aztecs 28 yard line but Price would throw back to back incomplete passes. New kicker Travis Coons who is replacing graduated kicker Erik Folk would miss the 47 yard field goal badly that would have put the Huskies up 24-6. The Aztecs with a little over a quarter left wouldn't waste this golden opportunity to come back and make this a game.
With the ball on their own 28 yard line Katz once again was facing pressure would rush for four yards. After a short run the Aztecs were facing a third and three from their own 36 yard line. Katz on the third down would go up the sidelines for 32 yards to the Huskies 32 yard line as the third quarter had ended with the Huskies leading 21-6. Katz would throw an incomplete pass, followed up by Dominique Sandifier getting stuffed for no gain. On third down Katz would attempt to go to the end zone as Tre Watson appeared to have been burned. Instead Watson made up for it with the key deflection. The Aztecs would pick on him again on 4th down would hit Sandifier for 28 yards on a wheel route down to the Huskies four yard line. Back to back rushes would net only one yard as the Aztecs faced a third and goal from the three yard line. Katz again facing the blitz got out of it with a run of two yards down to the Aztecs one yard line. Facing a fourth and goal there was a huge pile as the Aztecs handed the ball to Adam Muema. It was iffy if he had crossed but it was ruled a touchdown cutting the lead to 21-12. The second strange call by Long was when he decided to go for two here. Katz would find his tight end Gavin Escobar open in the back of the end zone but senior Justin Glenn just barely deflected it as the Huskies stopped the two point play still leading 21-12.
Huskies offense would once again stall at midfield punting the ball back to the Aztecs with under 10 minutes to go. Starting from their own 16 yard line Katz would be sacked by Andrew Hudson for a loss of two yards. On the following play though Kazee would rush for 26 yards to the Aztecs 40 yard line. Next play Katz would hit Lockett for a gain of 32 yards to the Huskies 28 yard line. Facing a third and three from the 21 yard line the Aztecs would run the ball for nine yards down the Huskies 12 yard line with 6:13 left in the game. Katz would throw an incomplete pass, then rush for four yards facing a third and six from the eight yard line. On third down Feeney forced some pressure on Katz as Gregory Ducre filling in for Trufant who had to leave late in the game made a nice defensive play. Now with 4:50 left in the game and having two timeouts the Aztecs trailed by a touchdown and a field goal to win the game. The third and final mind boggling move that head coach Rocky Long made was he went for it on fourth and goal from the eight yard line. Katz would go to the end zone and again senior Glenn made a nice play defensively as the Huskies defense held serve.
Now the Huskies offense would take over from their own eight yard line hoping to grind out the clock. After Sankey ran for no gain and Price had an incomplete pass the Huskies were facing a huge third down from their own nine yard line with still 4:05 left in the game. This is when having a healthy Keith Price unlike last year came into play. Price would rush up the middle on a broken play for a gain of 17 yards to the 26 yard line. That was a huge first down as the Huskies continued to run some clock. After two Sankey runs for a combined seven yards the Huskies faced another third down from their own 33 yard line with 2:41 left in the game. Trusting his quarterback the Huskies called a pass play as Price hit Kevin Smith for a gain of seven yards to pick up the crucial third and three. The Huskies would then run the clock down to 51 seconds before punting it. With no timeouts Katz ran three times for 33 yards as time ran out on the Aztecs as the Huskies won 21-12.
For the Huskies who earned the victory to start their year off 1-0 it was done mostly by the defense. The defense had four quarterback sacks, three turnovers, one touchdown, stopped both two point conversions and made the key defensive stand at the end of the game. The offense was led by Keith Price who finished 25-35(71.4%) for 222 yards(6.3 YPA) with one touchdown. He also ran for a net of 17 yards(actually 37 but minus 20 for sack yardage) which was a huge plus. His main targets were the super sophomores Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Kasen Williams. Seferian-Jenkins had a career high nine receptions for 82 yards while Williams had six receptions for 75 yards with a touchdown. Kevin Smith had two receptions for 20 yards while Jaydon Mickens had two receptions for 16 yards. Overall Price completed passes to nine different receivers. The Huskies struggled running the ball as Bishop Sankey was held to 66 yards on a career high 22 carries(3.0 YPC) with a touchdown. Erich Wilson had 22 yards rushing on two carries.
For the Aztecs they were led by Ryan Katz who was 10-19 passing for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Where he hurt the Huskies was with his legs as he ran for a net of 77 yards(lost 23 from sacks so in reality 100 yards) including that big 32 yarder. Walter Kazee ran for 86 yards on only nine carries. Adam Muema had only 32 yards rushing on 11 carries but had a touchdown. Aztecs leading receiver was Colin Locket who had four receptions for 48 yards but had a costly fumble which cost the Aztecs a touchdown. The Aztecs defense held the Huskies to only 108 yards offense in the second half including Price going 8-14 passing while Sankey carried the ball 13 times for 17 yards in the second half.
The Huskies did something they couldn't do last year which was play a poor offensive game and still win. The good news is the defense appears to be a lot stronger than last season while the bad news is the offensive line play. Thankfully Price was on his "A" game in the first half or the Huskies would have had trouble scoring points which they didn't do in the second half cause Price wasn't perfect. The Huskies offense didn't play up to their abilities but still walked away with a win. This was a different feeling than last year where the Huskies escaped barely with a victory over Eastern Washington. This year the Huskies led the entire game and led the entire second half by two scores. Despite the head scratching moves by the Aztecs coaching staff the Huskies earned this victory. For the first time since 2007 the Huskies have won back to back season openers. For the first time since 2003 the Huskies have won three straight home openers. At least the Huskies are back to winning games with their defense which has to feel good for anyone who witnessed the Alamo Bowl last year.
Observations:
- I thought the player of the game was Travis Feeney who was a complete unknown before this game. He redshirted in 2011 as a two star recruit who was brought in to play safety. Now with injuries at the linebacker position Feeney found himself not only playing in his first career Huskies game but starting at outside linebacker. Feeney made plays as he had five tackles, two tackles for loss, a huge quarterback sack while also forcing a fumble on that play. Feeney like the rest of his Husky defenders just appeared quick out there something we haven't seen in a while from this defense. Feeney in his first career game as a Husky made quite the impression. A guy who was barely mentioned in my blog write up heading into the season is now a household name after the game he had against the Aztecs.
- No more Chris Polk anymore so who is going to replace him? Well after this game that question is still left to be answered. Jesse Callier was hurt right off the bat after catching two passes for eight yards while receiving no carries. Bishop Sankey was the work horse in this game and early on he was having a great game. At halftime he had 49 yards rushing on nine carries which is good for 5.4 yards per carry while having a touchdown run. Then in the second half it was a complete disaster for the sophomore who was a highly recruited running back. Sankey was held to just 17 yards rushing on 13 carries which is a terrible 1.3 yards per carry. Not only that but he had a costly fumble in the red zone. If the Huskies kick the field goal there they lead 24-6 and the ball game is over. If he doesn't fumble that still leaves Price with a chance to throw a touchdown pass to put the game at 28-6 then the game is really over. He didn't get the tough yards and you can't be fumbling in the red zone. I'd say the first game in the post Polk era was a complete disaster and Sankey better improve before fans start comparing him to Rich Alexis.
- One sophomore who continues to impress everyone is tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Seferian-Jenkins last year as a true freshman had one of the best seasons in Husky tight end history. He is off to a good start to eclipse that with a career high nine receptions for 82 yards. Whenever Price needed to complete a key pass it was either going to Seferian-Jenkins or Kasen Williams.
Seferian-Jenkins could be the best tight end in the nation and is guaranteed to be with the Huskies for this season and next. He'll be a first round pick after the 2013 season he's that good. He's so physically strong on those quick passes he carries defenders while also having the speed to get some YAC yardage. Seferian-Jenkins will be a major weapon for the Huskies to use and if Sankey continues to struggle look for Seferian-Jenkins to be used even more especially down in the red zone as Sarkisian won't tolerate leaving points on the scoreboard. Seferian-Jenkins is off to a great start this year and is on his way to being an all-american someday if not this year.
- Another super sophomore who had a big game to start this season was Kasen Williams who finished with six receptions for 75 yards with a touchdown. Williams was going early too in the first quarter he had four receptions for 44 yards with a touchdown. Then Sarkisian went away from him for some reason as he only had two receptions for 31 yards the rest of the game. Williams had an unbelievable 37 yard touchdown reception wiped away from the stat sheet and also denied him his first career 100 yard receiving game. Williams like Seferian-Jenkins is a physical receiver who on the wide receiver screens tends to carry his defender for some extra yardage. Williams will also play in the NFL someday and hopefully be an all-american probably in 2013 though. Williams now has seven career touchdowns in 13 career games so he is a touchdown machine much like the guy he is taking over for Jermaine Kearse. Williams needed to have a good game as the Huskies started two freshman beside him and you can tell Price just trust Williams more than the freshman for now.
- Josh Shirley began this season where he left off last season which is putting pressure on the quarterback. He officially only had one sack along with sophomore defensive end Andrew Hudson but both were creating pressure all game on Ryan Katz. Shirley also stopped the first two point attempt on San Diego State which caused all the head scratching moves in the fourth quarter. Look for Shirley to have a big season this upcoming year as the full-time starter as the Huskies know what they have in him.
Shirley last year had nine sacks and had 3.5 sacks in the bowl loss to Baylor. Look for Shirley to challenge the school record for sacks in a season and sacks in a career. He has the ability and with Justin Wilcox emphasizing more blitzes that just means more opportunities for Shirley to record some quarterback sacks. Shirley is a special talent and a guy many were high on when he finally made his way to Washington in July of 2010. It is nice to see another sophomore having a big impact for this program. The Huskies program had a ton of sophomore's making major contributions as I just pointed out with Shirley, Williams, Seferian-Jenkins and hopefully Sankey. Shirley was an animal this past Saturday and he'll have some monster games this upcoming season.
- Previous defensive coordinator Nick Holt was pure fire as you saw his emotion all the time. While new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox appears more calm and collected. When things weren't going right for the Huskies his demeanor stayed the same while he continued to dial up the blitzes. He has said his goal is have roughly 35% of the Huskies defensive plays be some sort of blitz. How rare was this defensive win? First time the Huskies won a game not scoring 30+ points since the 2010 Holiday Bowl win which saw the Huskies win 19-7. Last time the Huskies won a game not scoring any second half offensive touchdowns? Try 2009 when they upset USC 16-13. Last time the Huskies won a game scoring zero offensive points in the second half? Try 2007 when the Huskies defeated Boise State 24-10. That is why Wilcox deserves most of the credit for this win as defensive wins for the Huskies have been very rare lately.
- I felt early on Price looked the best he has ever looked when he began the game 11 for 12 passing including 11 straight completions as the Huskies scored on their first two drives. He would finish 25-35 passing for 222 yards with a touchdown while rushing for 17 yards. I noticed when right tackle Ben Riva went down so did the offense. The Huskies couldn't run the ball at all in the second half besides Price scrambles. Therefore all the play action pass attempts ended in sacks or incompletions. I did think Price struggles was due to an inexperienced receiving core, shaky offensive line play at best and lofty standards. Price still completed over 70% of his passes and didn't turn the ball over. A healthy Price this year unlike last year means more scrambles too which he showed plenty in this game. With the game on the line and the Huskies needing to run out the clock they couldn't pound it so they had to count on Price. Price had a huge third down scramble inside the Huskies own 10 yard line. Then Price hit a key third down pass to Kevin Smith which basically iced the game. Keep in mind on Price's stats he had a 37 yard passing touchdown wiped away then a 13 yard scramble wiped away two plays later. I thought overall Price played a good game and is on the path towards another all Pac-12 selection.
- The first two series of the game I thought were some of Steve Sarkisian's best play calling since he has been Huskies head coach. He didn't mess around and let his star quarterback dictate the pace by featuring Kasen Williams, Austin Seferian-Jenkins plus spreading the ball around. The Huskies led 14-0 as the offense was clicking. Then Sarkisian did what he always seems to do at Washington which is try to get too cute. Went away from the quick hitters to Seferian-Jenkins and Williams which was working so beautifully. Didn't use Mickens speed at all especially with the running game struggling. Didn't give Wilson any carries in the second half despite him busting a 17 yard run first half. In the second half Price was 8-14 passing while completing four passes to Seferian-Jenkins, two to Williams, one to Smith and a dump off to Sankey that went for no gain. While Sankey ran the ball 13 times for 17 yards at some point he needed to realize the line couldn't block worth a crap and ditch the play actions. I felt this game was a big setback for a head coach entering his fourth season. I'll say this for Sarkisian his program though appears to be light years ahead of where it was two years ago. The talent level on both sides of the ball appears to be better off than when he got here. So with that Sarkisian now improves to 20-19 as head coach for the Huskies as he has stated all offseason it's time to take the next step this year!
The Huskies won the game and improve to 1-0 which ultimately is what matters. If the Huskies are to take that "next step" as a program they must improve their defense from the last couple of seasons. The 2011 defense allowed the most points in Huskies history followed by 2008, 2007 and then 2010. So the four worst defenses in Huskies history have happened in the last five years. That is why I'm actually encouraged by this win due to the play of the defense. I think the offense will be fine as they left plenty of points on the board. The Huskies shouldn't have to apologize for beating a bowl team to begin their season as San Diego State is an average team who the Huskies defeated. The season is early and the injuries are piling up for this team. The Huskies must overcome them as the tough part of the schedule is about to begin as they play at #3 LSU, then after hosting Portland State the Huskies play #21 Stanford, at #5 Oregon then host #1 USC. The Huskies better get better in a hurry as the schedule is about to become unfriendly which is why winning this game was so important. The Huskies took care of business at home and hope to pull off the shocking upset next week down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
